The Secret to Finding the Three People Who Will Change Your Life

That's the crux of the Who's Got Your Back message, the vital need for a handful of deep, trusting relationships with people mutually invested in your success. Now: How to find them?

Often, you don't need to - these people are already in your life. You just have to make a choice to take the relationship deeper than you have in the past - you have to invite them in.

One of the best ways I know of doing that is what I call the "long slow dinner," introduced to me by one of the all-time great bosses, Greg "The Hammer" Seal at Deloitte. The Long Slow Dinner isn't about "wining and dining" someone. It's about getting to know someone in the right environment. You don't even have to go out to a restaurant at all-especially given that you may be meeting over time with a number of people you are thinking of as potential lifeline relationships. Its main purpose is simply to get people out from behind their defenses, those concentric circles of desks, cubicles, office doors, home offices, living rooms, phones, and computers, that close off people at work and at home.

People at their desks are effectively locked in a cocoon of established behavior. You want to get them away from that. At work, the open floor plans that are so popular nowadays actually frustrate genuine relationships. The no-walls office style is meant to engender efficiency and openness while breaking down rigid hierarchies-and in some ways it does. But I've seen it also prevent open communication for fear of who may be listening; it makes some people cling to their desks like life rafts, as the last refuges of safety and solitude.

Try this instead: Invite someone out for a cup of coffee or tea. Sometimes I'll use the couch in the reception area of a company, since it's typically the quietest, least used space around. Better still is breakfast or lunch outside the office or home. Early or midday meals can be challenging because time boxes you in, but at least they get you away from the physical distractions and clatter of the office.

The long slow dinner, in short, can take place anywhere the two of you both feel safe. Your job during the dinner is, first and foremost, to get to know the other person better - gradually traveling up the intimacy pyramid with them. (The "Eight Steps to Instant Intimacy" are in the Greenlight Group Launch Kit with your purchase of Who's Got Your Back, one of the free resources available at keithferrazzi.com.)

If your candidate already knows you well, the long, slow dinner is also a time to check out his "candor quotient": Is this someone who can be honest with you about what you need to change to improve? Trying asking, "I'd love to hear if you think there is anything that would benefit me to know that holds me back?" Invite him to take a risk with you, and see what happens.

Warmest,

Keith

You are the one who decided what you are worth. The key is that we believe our services are worth the price we are asking.[/quote:292ze3jd] Hi Tami, You're absolutely right. In "Think and Grow Rich", Jessie B. Rittenhouse says "For Life is a just employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire Only to learn, dismayed , That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid" (Napoleon Hill 35). I think the same can be said when setting prices on eBay or Craigslist, especially when people are trying to haggle you.
Top sales skills Top sales skills - Qualifying Fast to Avoid Wasting Sales Time Do you chase after your prospects until they tell you yes or no? Do you ever tell your prospects "No", as in "No, I am not going to sell to you"? There are many things in selling that you do not and will not be able to control. The one thing that you do have control over is your time and how you choose to use it. Motivating Prospects Qualifying goes beyond budget, authority, and need. You want to sell to prospects who *want* to buy from you. Finding prospects that need our products usually is not difficult. Finding those who really want our products though can be very hard if we wait for them to come to us. Selling to People Outside Your Comfort Zone Most salespeople who are "people persons", already think that they are good at this. Let me ask you a question. When you last lost a sale, how was your rapport with the key person who decided against you?
The Second Life Platform The Second Life Platform - Greetings! I'm not sure how many of you have heard of or are sensitive to Second Life and its related entities. However, Second Life is a fantastic platform to mimmick real life business operations in a real currency based economy. There are plenty of successful stories for creative individuals, but I'd highly suggest doing your research and appreciating Second Life for what it is, and what it isn't.

So are you currently a member? And more importantly, have you tried to open a store front in that virtual world?
Victoria's Secret - Too Sexy? Victoria's Secret - Too Sexy? - This will be upsetting for some men. I just heard a report about Victoria's Secret and it was interesting. Their sales were down drastically in the 4th quarter of 2007 and the report was about how they are thinking the company has gotten too far away from the heritage that made it the blockbuster company it is. They are thinking the ads etc have become too sexy and the plan (at the moment) is to make the ads more sophisticated. That would be like the Super Bowl commercial which was very tasteful, but very different from any Victoria's Secret I've seen lately. Who do you all think the current sexy ads are targeting? I think its the men that they hope will buy these items for their female significant others. I hate to give Omarosa any kudos - but most women aren't "sold" on an item by an ad of a near naked sexy woman. Shri
