Developing Leadership Effectiveness

What advice would you offer others who are trying to develop their leadership effectiveness?

It’s reasonably simple: Develop a core philosophy. Ours is you can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want. The success of our people is fairly well assured. I say that because they have great faith, tremendous work ethic, great family support, marvelous philosophy of life, and when you put all of those things together we think our company is preparing for the future.

My own family is deeply involved. My son is our President and CEO; my son-in-law is our Chief Operating Officer; my youngest daughter is the editor of my books. I’m convinced each of them would have their jobs were there no kinship involved-—they are good at what they do. Recently, one of our granddaughters graduated from college and within six weeks of starting with our company she has already moved up a notch, based on her performance. It is a beautiful thing to watch your family grow, develop and mature in their chosen field.

Incidentally, our entire family is within easy driving range of Dallas. That includes our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We are so thrilled they have stayed close to home because we believe leadership at home is key to leadership on the job, and that leadership always includes genuine respect and love for those you are working with.

Leaders understand that their people need to have the “home court” advantage. I’m talking about the home life because what happens at home affects what happens on the job, and what happens on the job affects what happens at home. In my own life my home field advantage has proven to be tremendously important in every phase of my career. When I go home, regardless of what’s happened “outside,” I know that the door is open; my wife of 57 years has open arms and she is on my side. We do a lot of talking because research also shows that the intelligence of a man is different from the intelligence of a woman. No man or no woman has ever been as smart separately as they are as a team. The husband might come home with a brilliant idea, explain it carefully to his wife, and she’ll say, “Well, I don’t agree with that.” He asks, “Why not?” She says, “Just because.” For a woman, “just because” is a legitimate answer; for a man it can be ridiculous. Here’s why. A woman instinctively-—and yes, she listens to her instincts-—knows that something is not right about what her husband is saying, and although she cannot articulate it at the moment, later she will be able to express it quite freely and easily. That’s why conversation is so important. We learn from each other, and when we take each other seriously our creativity goes up, our effectiveness increases, and our leadership is more balanced and certain.

Finally, I must emphasize that leaders need to be constant students. They need to stay ahead of the curve. They need balance in their lives. The research I’ve done clearly shows that if standard of living is your number one objective, quality of life almost never improves; but if quality of life is your number one objective, invariably standard of living follows.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami

Re: This ones a winner Re: This ones a winner - Dear Sboggs Congratulations on your networking idea. The guys that want $20K might be trying to bleed you or perhaps their approach is just to complex and expensive. I'm a hardware guy so I can't help with your issue. Have you studied networking and programming? You might be able to make your idea fly with some training. You can buy a website and have it online in 20 minutes. Developing a web site that generates traffic requires some work.
niche forum categories niche forum categories - I think Kevin just touched on the point that I was going make... and that is developing 'categories' that stick. Sales and Marketing may be too broad for example. However I can almost guarantee you that you would see many more sign-ups if you tailored a category to 'internet marketing' for newbies. I've seen this work on other forums, however, [i:1i903wkn]it can get a little frantic[/i:1i903wkn]... Fine tuning the categories, or expanding the scope should be effective. I think a lot of IM folks are surfing right on by because they're not finding what they're looking for here... Just a few thoughts: Better Blogging Developing Info Products Internet Marketing Presentation Skills More How to's Another point is... a lot of people don't know that they can benefit from participating in forums. The signature links to their site - if they have one - can / should be motivation enough to get more involved. The more internet savvy members that have signatures seem to stick around more... Don't you think?
