Revealing Ourselves
We reveal ourselves in many different ways: By the people with whom we associate, the way we use our free time, our clothing, our sense of humor, etc. We even reveal ourselves by the way we walk, talk, the way we handle our successes and our failures.
We reveal ourselves by the way we deal with people who are less fortunate physically, mentally, financially and socially than we are, and by the way we talk to people we believe have more of all the above than we have. The smile or frown on our face, as well as a look of compassion or of anger, will give away our inner selves. In short, we are a walking encyclopedia about ourselves, whether we speak or not. Yes, our actions reveal a great deal.
Unfortunately, too many of us permit our mouths to overload our backs and we feel pressed too much of the time. Stephen Arterburn offers this: "Don't allow yourself to reach for more than you can handle. Win small before you try to win big. Commit to excellence whatever you do. In addition to excellence, commit to service. Those who succeed in order to serve find fulfillment and meaning that others who seek only power will never have." In short, he's saying think about the other person.
Many years ago, William Penn said, "I expect to pass through life but once. If, therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again." Henry Ward Beecher put it this way: "Though the world needs reproof and correction, it needs kindness more. Though it needs the grasp of the strong hand, it needs too the open palm of love and tenderness." My all-time favorite quote is "You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want."
