Where You Stand Is Important
To be honest, I could have started this column with "where you sit is also important." The reality is that where you sit influences where you stand, but where you stand has a directbearingon where you sit. Let me explain.
In our business and governmental world, each one of us is influenced by the position we occupy in the organization as to how we will feel about certain projects that are brought to the decision table. For example, the research and development department and the sales department like to spendmoneyto develop new products. On the other hand, the accounting department would probably feel that, in view of the economy, they should be more cautious in investing funds which might not produce a return for a long time. That's where the decision-making process is so important. All factors have to be weighed and analyzed as to the long-range best interests of the company. Once the facts are in, the decision has to be made and that decision will affect the entire company. That's the reason input from everyone involved is important.
It's also true that where a person stands influences to a very large degree where they sit. Research very clearly indicates that people who take a stand for what is right, build on an ethical, moral base and stand on principle, are the ones who end up in theupper echelonsof business. When you put these two factors together, it simply means that the person ofintegrity(and, obviously, experience and ability) is going to be the one who is most likely to end up making those all-importantdecisionsabout the best place to put the company time and resources. It's still true that the best way is the right way, or the right way is the best way. Think about it and I'll SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

- Hi Yinka,
I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent").
We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!
Import / Export Business
- I am in the benign stages of starting an import/export business and would like to know
the most important factors in the early stages of the business.
1)The most secure method conduct financial transactions
2)Important issues with development of a website?
It’s enssential
- Advertising is essential whether you advertise in big scale or small. Having a signage outside your store or office is already advertising. If you can't afford to advertise in newspapers or radio, you can try giving out flyers and brochures. Do email blasts. Have a blog or website. Send SMS or text messages to friends and relatives so they can pass it on to other friends. There are several ways in promoting and advertising your product without really spending so much. Important thing is, you should always let people know you exist. As the saying goes "A business with no sign is a sign of no business"
Fundraising for school activities such as sports, clubs
- About a month ago, there was a two week time span when I entered my local Walmart, and saw a bunch of kids (with an adult supervisor) stationed outside each door asking for donations for their track team, or their swim team. (Never saw one for a debating or science club, but they may have been out there.)
They weren't selling anything - no cookies, no candybars - just asking for donations.
And I felt sorry for 'em because most people were just walking on by, so I contributed a dollar each time.
But it got me to thinking.... was this really good training for the younger generation? Stand outside stores 'guilting' people into contributing to their wants, but without giving anything in return (ie those cookies or candybars.)
And usually every weekend I drive by people standing by the side of the road holding up signs advertising car washes, again presumably sponsored by an organization in order to earn money.
And I remember reading somewhere that these types of events rarely do make money. (Especially when any signs pointing people to them are usually so small and illegible that drivers can't even read them and drive on by in frustration...)
What activities can kids do to earn money for their school, that isn't equivalent to begging? Moving lawns, dog walking... what? Should they form an entrepreneurial group and do something that way?

Haven't read this yet, but it seems like she's advocating an "Us against them" mentality. Neverthless, networking with fellow women - and men! - only makes good sense.
