John Johnson was born in a "shotgun" house with a tin roof in Arkansas City, Arkansas. Today he lives in a high-rise on Chicago's Gold Coast and in a beautiful home in Palm Springs, and among numerous other enterprises is the owner/publisher of Ebony magazine. He has been the guest of every president since Eisenhower and is one of the 400 wealthiest people in America. In 1996 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His personal wealth was once estimated to be over $150 million.

Message: You, too, live in the geographical center of the world, and you can get to wherever you want to go from there! The "place you want to go," hopefully, is "the top." There is plenty of room for you at the top, but not enough room to sit down. You must also understand that, as sales trainer John Hammond says, "The elevator to the top is out of order - you will have to take the stairs and you will have to take them one at a time." I won't promise you an easy trip, but I will guarantee you that the rewards make the climb worthwhile. So, start climbing the stairs today and I'll SEE YOU OVER THE TOP!

Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals - According to Guy Kawasaki, he says "you should only hire and keep people that you'd hustle over to and engage in a conversation...Life is too short to work with people you don't naturally like-especially in a young, small organization" ("The Art of the Start" pg 112). I think the reverse is also true and I wouldn't want to work for anyone I didn't like or want to talk to if I saw him/her outside of the office. In addition, Kawasaki also says "Steve Jobs has a saying that A players hire A players; B players hire C players; and C players hire D players...This trickle-down effect causes bozo explosions in companies. If there is one thing a CEO must do, it's hire a management team that is better than he is" ("The Art of the Start" pg 101). Kawasaki's quote is definitely in favor of hiring the ambitious worker, but do most CEO's even have the humility to admit that someone is better than them?

It’s enssential - Advertising is essential whether you advertise in big scale or small. Having a signage outside your store or office is already advertising. If you can't afford to advertise in newspapers or radio, you can try giving out flyers and brochures. Do email blasts. Have a blog or website. Send SMS or text messages to friends and relatives so they can pass it on to other friends. There are several ways in promoting and advertising your product without really spending so much. Important thing is, you should always let people know you exist. As the saying goes "A business with no sign is a sign of no business"
