Building Entrepreneurial Communities is a 20 year journey

Guest post by: Brad Feld

Article Overview: During the Tahoe Tech Talk three hour Q&A segment with the panelists, someone in the audience asked about how to create a stronger entrepreneurial community in their city so that it could be “more like Silicon Valley.” After a little banter, Chris Sacca and Dave Morin called me up onto stage to do a short riff on what we’ve done in Boulder and what makes it special. Damon Clinkscales recorded it on his iPhone – the three minute video is embedded below.

During the Tahoe Tech Talk three hour Q&A segment with the panelists, someone in the audience asked about how to create a stronger entrepreneurial community in their city so that it could be "more like Silicon Valley." After a little banter, Chris Sacca and Dave Morin called me up onto stage to do a short riff on what we've done in Boulder and what makes it special. Damon Clinkscales recorded it on his iPhone - the three minute video is embedded below. The key points are:

Don't try to be Silicon Valley (it's a special place - learn from it - but don't try to emulate it)

It takes at least a half dozen people that are committed to provide leadership over 20 years

You have to do things that engage the entire entrepreneurial community (e.g. TechStars)

You have to continually get new first time entrepreneurs into the entrepreneurial community

There's a lot of stuff about this in our new book Do More Faster in case you want to go deeper on this topic.

Type of business with building Type of business with building - If you owned a building and Wal-Mart was opening its doors across the street in a previously unoccupied area (along with 12-14 small shops), what type of business would you start? Here are the considerations: 1. Money is a non-factor 2. Building is fairly large (10,000) square feet 3. Building is on the corner of a busy intersection (about to get much busier)

Re: Kevin needs "social glue" ideas Re: Kevin needs "social glue" ideas - Hi, I like the idea of "10 items that could act as "social glue" because I am an internet marketer. But I agree with the rest that the 10 recent post is nice. Maybe we should open up a new section in the forums on Social Media...or Social Media Marketing. I will tell you that the world is about 1 1/2 behind when it comes to understanding social media. Building a section now will put EvanCarmichael.com is a great position a year down the road when people realize Social Media can produce more traffic than SEO. Jeff
