There Are Miles and Miles left for you and I to go.

I just received an extraordinary letter from a young lady named Allison. She touched my heart. It’s one thing to receive a fan letter; it’s another to receive a letter that shares the author’s heart. This, Allison did, with such verve and vision it stopped me in my tracks.

She said to me, “I feel so blessed to be 25 and have the ability to connect with young people because they are not used to seeing a young black woman who is articulate, and most important, forward thinking. This IS the “Age of the Entrepreneur” and it’s also the age of freedom. Young adults, women, and minorities are slowly reaching an even playing field where we have no excuse but to thrive. I want to honor our brothers and sisters in the past who fought for me on slave ships and who died for me recently in Iraq. I tell you all this so I’m held accountable for my mission to change the world – one day at a time.”

I met Allison in Pheonix, Arizona at the Entrepreneurship Conference I mentioned to you in a previous manifesto. She was one of a contingent of young entrepreneurial students being taught by Peter Burns III, the magical man who recently came into my life to introduce me to his brainchild The College of Entrepreneurship of which I am now Chairman. As I meet Peter’s students, I’m forced to ask myself, what is this magic he possesses? How is it he has inspired these young people so well? What is it that he brings into the classroom with him that has moved them all to take on the entrepreneurial mission with such zeal, such religious passion, such joy?

I think I know.

Peter is the one we all know with the last name of Pan.

He resolutely refuses to grow up, and all of his young students recognize him as one of their own.

Would that their parents could catch the bug!

Can you imagine this world with people like Allison creating new ventures as magical as they are?

Can you imagine how playful, how colorful, how spirited these businesses would be?

Forget how successful!

Oh, yes, Allison, this is The Age of The Entrepreneur. And what an age it will be! It will be the age in which millions upon millions of us discover the secret joy that lives at the heart of creation. At the heart of imagination. At the heart of Walt Disney’s Imagineer.

Thank you, dear Allison. And thank your professor, Peter Burns. I know without a shadow of a doubt that we will all see the two of you, and many, many more, here in The Dreaming Room, ready to grow and explore.

Starting a New Business Starting a New Business - Congratulations on the first step of deciding to create your own business. First, you have to ascertain if you are going to be selling your products or services to people or to businesses. People purchase products and services for three basic reasons: •To satisfy basic needs •To solve problems •To make themselves feel good. You have to determine which of these three categories your product or service is the solution to. Businesses, unlike individuals, buy products and services for three reasons as well: •To increase revenues •To maintain the status quo •To decrease expenses. Knowing the reasons why people/businesses buy, you should have a picture emerging of who you think your "Target Market" (or ideal customer) is. Once you have zeroed in on your solution, you are ready to create your Marketing Strategy. If you look at any company that has grown rapidly over the past few years, (i.e. WestJet and Starbucks), it should demonstrate to you the importance of Marketing. In simple terms these companies have: •Clearly defined what makes them different; •Who their ideal customer is; •How to reach them; •Why customers should buy from them; •And most importantly why customers should come back again. It is strong Marketing Awareness that singles out the best companies. I can not stress enough how important it is to create a "living" Marketing Plan before you even start. I hope this helps a little in the creation of your plan. All the very best of luck. Remember: "A Goal without a Plan is just a Wish" Miles of Smiles, Marketing Maven
Re: 5 Things to Avoid if You Want to Rank High on Google Re: 5 Things to Avoid if You Want to Rank High on Google - This is great information. Another thing I have learned to help google spiders, spider your site correctly is where you place your navigation. I learned if you put your navigation on the left you should start it 2 cells below header. The 1st cell on left should be left blank, and it doesnt matter size. The reason for doing this is obviously everyone reads left to right, well supposedly so do spiders. Now if it is left blank the spider will skip by and go directly to the meat of your site. Whether or not of how true it is, I like the concept it seems like it makes sense.
Re: Eng Lit Academic Site Up For Review Re: Eng Lit Academic Site Up For Review - Hi Dave, - The font for the text on the left, the welcome message, is too small. - The copy can be a bit stronger, esp. if i'm going to be purchasing Eng Lit essay. - Mailing list subscription module doesn't really say what's in it for the subscriber. What am I subscribing to? What's the value? - Ad placement of the Amazon widget is questionable. Why the repeat and why the vertical misalignment? - Too much padding on both sides too little room in the middle for crucial information. - Essays on the navigation bar should probably be second from the left. Just my humble opinion. I think the information organization and presentation can be done a bit better.
Ads on your website: Where to place them Ads on your website: Where to place them - It's all very well to have ads on your website, but where do you place them? Have any studies been done to see if people puchase more from banners, or from ads on the left or right hand side of the pages? For myself, I've sometimes clicked on a website to find the screen filled with google ads. I have to scroll down past those ads to find the text I'm looking for. When that's the case, I don't even bother to look at the page, I just leave the site, because that kind of thing annoys me. I dont' mind ads to the left and right of the text, but I object to having it be center stage...
Change can be good Change can be good - My first website was pretty good and everyone I know thought so to. I designed it myself, kept after it often and made sure everything was up to date. I manually submitted to search engines and basically did EVERYTHING myself. However, after about a year or so, I decided it needed an overhall. I left it up to the pros this time around (less time consuming for me) and it REALLy made a difference. The new site was launched in September 07 and the traffic has really increased during that time (except when December came). This month is slow too, but getting back up to par as each day npasses, it seems to do a little better. I do not regret giving it an overhall. But I do regret wasting a lot of my time on the first one...had I only left it up to the pros a year ago!
