College a waste of time and money for kids

Last week I made an off-the-cuff comment in my column that stirred up several e-mails asking if I was serious. What I said was that I had no intention of sending my kids to college. I was dead serious. I find the thought of college abhorrent, particularly for 18- to 20-year-olds. Kids have a lot of energy at that point, and to deaden it with a forced, unsupervised diversity of random topics taught by mostly mediocre professors is a waste of that energy.

I can't remember anything good coming from my freshman year - other than starting a business with a few of my classmates, which inspired me for subsequent businesses.

Re: Did you reach your goal this year? - Turns out there's 5 meeting locations for Toastmasters International in State College alone... only 30 minutes from my town. Most likely due to Penn State University, but surprising nonetheless that I have never heard of the organization before. I'll have to look more into it as it sounds like something I could benefit from.
Re Thinking Smarter - Hi Tami, Thanks for the encouragement. Yesterday I had an experience, which is great. On a volunteer basis I teach French at a College of the Third Age. Often we work with a book, but one guy left it at home. We are only a small class, hence I had a new idea to find words by way of a spider web. Each word had something in common. We filled the whole flipchart with words. Just by thinking creative. Regards Beat
Queen West & John Street, much more accessible than befo - Kris, no specific interested prospects, but I am thinking of this year's graduates of Ontario College of Art, or previous year's, or part-time instructors who would benefit from proximity and continuing contacts with OCA, or freelancers who used to have an office at CBC TV before the many downsizings (set designers, etc.), or CITY TV (and affiliates) freelancers and part-timers. This is why I like this forum, the information we get here are priceless

[/quote:39vg8s93] If at all possible, you need to stop using Kinko's now and go price some real printers. It should cost only a couple of dollars a piece, if that, to print your book. Admittedly you'll have to buy in bulk, but the overall savings - selling a $2 book for $20 so that you make an $18 profit instead of a measley $10.... is something every kidpreneur should think about!
