Riding the Blue Highways

A summary of a new Jeff Rubin of CIBC report on the excess capacity in the U.S. auto industry:

The U.S. is producing too many vehicles, according to a new report from CIBC World Markets, and sales already at a 34-year low will likely drop another 30 to 40 per cent and may never recover to previous levels.

The report projects that American consumers will only buy about eight to nine million vehicles a year over the next five years, roughly half of what was purchased in the last five years. As a result, the report projects that roughly half of the 51 light vehicle plants in the U.S. will be permanently closed in the coming years, with a loss of another 200,000 jobs on top of the 560,000 jobs already lost in the sector this decade.

…The report finds that there will be 25 million fewer cars on the road in the U.S. in the next five years. With the vast majority of sales purchased on credit, buying a new vehicle simply won’t be an option for many Americans as they struggle with record household debt levels and financing that is increasingly difficult to access.

The last paragraph, in particular, is an important one.

Re: Are you a Blue, Red, or Green? Re: Are you a Blue, Red, or Green? - My Structogram self analysis showed I'm majority Red-Green with a fair bit of Blue. While our crew at Happy Worker found this intriguing by itself, what I've been most excited about is the potential for improving our sales process results. For example, we've heard of a retail chain that redesigned their store layouts based on Structogram profiles. They strategically displayed certain areas of their stores to fit different personalities - e.g. Red areas featured the most high end/hip designs with best of strength/speed/performance summarized, Blue areas had lots of technical analysis and comparisons, and Greens saw the products used in social settings with its human/ergonomic features emphasized. The cool part of course is that the chain was able to have their prospects self-categorize themselves by what area of the store they were attracted to, and their sales staff were trained in identifying and working with each type of person. Which unsurprisingly led to a significant increase in sales. In our new sales process we've included several questions and actions to help hypothesize our prospects' Structogram type, to help us best support them through the rest of the pathway. We're also looking at what web site changes we can make to ensure we're appealing to and supporting all types!

Re: Are you a Blue, Red, or Green? Re: Are you a Blue, Red, or Green? - Hum... a lot of reds responding... Business owners must be a very aggressive community. Now, I was surprised when I took the course personally to find out I was a Green, secondary Blue. Of course, not believing this, the first thing I did was turn to those around me to get their opinions on my colours (typical Green!). The only thing I can really say about STRUCTOGRAM is that it was fun to explore the depths of my social and physiological make-up... I did this a over a year ago now and still use it in my daily interactions (always be on your toes with Reds).
Re: Kevin's Case Study #6 - Marketing an information resource? Re: Kevin's Case Study #6 - Marketing an information resource? - Hey. have you done any surveying etc. to find out if the franchisors WANT and NEED the type of information you are looking to provide? What do you mean by saying you dont have what it takes to compete? Perhaps you arent thinking Blue Ocean Strategy enough? it means instead of competing, differentiate (which is what you want to do I get that), but how will the new revenue model work? would a company then have to list on both a lead gen site and your site?? would they do this? I would suggest a coffee with some of your clients and get their feedback on your ideas. Or perhaps finding a strategic alliance with one of the bigger lead gen firms? J
