Not Taking Vacations

Many Americans are giving up traditional vacations. The reasons range from having too little time off work to not having enough money to travel. But in many cases, people just aren’t in the habit of getting away from their jobs.

All this has some experts worried.

They’re afraid that workers aren’t getting away from their jobs long enough to relax - both physically and mentally. And, because of that, they’ll suffer from some kind of work overload.

It used to be that many people took two- and three-week vacations. Now, according to a recent online survey, one-third of people say they took five or fewer days of vacation in the past year.

One in four people surveyed said they felt that their bosses didn’t encourage them to take vacations . . . and one out of three people said they stayed connected with their office - either by phone or computer - while they were gone.

Personally, I don’t see the problem. If people don’t take vacations, oftentimes it’s because they love their work and don’t need a break from it.

And those are the kind of people I like to have working for me.

Re: How much time to you take off? Re: How much time to you take off? - Hi Evan, Vacations! I love them and wish I could take such breaks more often. I normally take a vacation of 15 days and this is how I utilize these days - Vacations give you time to enjoy the world with your family and friends. I generally spend the first week by really freaking out with my family and friends. During this there is no cell phone or laptop. Its just me with family and friends. Then there is the next week. This week I spend time analyzing the business that has happened during the past year and I try to figure out i. why I lost a deal ii. how to increase the success ratio iii. where I went wrong and stuff like these. This is the time I spend to look at my business with a third man's perspective and also take the help of a few of my friends who are into psychology, accounts and analysis. This is how I spend my vacations.
Re: New Video - Should I Get A Job Or Start A Business? Re: New Video - Should I Get A Job Or Start A Business? - Hi Evan, I was curious to know what you'd suggest and I think you gave excellent advice. Taking a year out to try and start your own business is a great idea. Taking a year out after college is a well established option so I guess it doesn't prejudice your chances of getting a job should you wish to do so later on; it probably improves your chances if you've been getting valuable experience of managing a business and of course, if all goes well, you won't need to find out. Definitely a video for my website. Thanks! David
Re: What is your worst / best month? Re: What is your worst / best month? - Best months for my business are historically March/April/May & August/Sept/Oct Worst months: December/January (Holidays) & June/July (Vacations) I see our traffic go way up during the good months and way down during the bad months. Very cyclic. Keep in mind, my clients buy businesses and no one thinks of doing that during the holiday or during vacation.
Re: looking for experienced affiliate feedback Re: looking for experienced affiliate feedback - Hi Chris, That's a great tip. The real benefit to running an affiliate marketing is getting other people to promote your business for you. Taking a pro-active approach as you suggest will certainly help.
Finding creativity Finding creativity - Great topic Andy! For me it's: - Going for a walk (I always try to get out at least once during the day) - Taking a shower - Reading business magazines (especially Inc and Business 2.0) - Late at night (I'm more productive / creative at night than during the day) - Relaxing with a drink at the bookstore
