What would the perfect business day look like?

Most days small business owners are juggling all the stuff that comes at them all day, either planned or self-inflicted, with a somewhat unsystematic, gut level kind of approach. I know I do that - sometimes it works, sometimes it really, really doesn’t work.

I also know that there is a perfect kind of day for me in my business, one that has effective, efficient and purposeful written all over it. I don’t always work that way, but when I do, it’s a lot more fun.

So I thought I would outline what my perfect business day (non-business days are another subject) looks and feels like and hope that you can share the same, or at least start thinking about intentionally creating perfect business days.

One disclaimer before I lay this out - I don’t, by any means, do this kind of day everyday - or even enough, but it’s a goal.

5:00 am, practice appreciation and silence, catch up on RSS reading, email, read New York Times
7:00 am, wake the kids up for school, eat breakfast with them
8:00 am, workout with my wife at gym or take a lap around Loose Park
9:00 am, at the office plan the day by category - I have about 8 buckets in business and life that I try to make sure I step in every day - mostly aspects of business like marketing, creating, finance and vision. It’s all important and you’ve got to do a little on each daily.
9:30 am - 1:00 pm - This is powerwork time for me - I’m a morning person so I get the most done here
Lunch in here somewhere - I need to get better about this one, get out of the office
3:00 - 6:00 - I do my best on the phone here, I like to put phone meetings, interviews and conference calls in this slot

I have some influences here that are probably familiar to most:

7 Spiritual Steps to Success - Deepak Chopra
Getting Things Done - Dave Allen (David is my guest expert for April’s Coaching Excellence Series - Enroll here)
10 Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management - Hyrum W. Smith (Smith is a lesser known founder of Franklin Covey but this book seemingly influenced Covey’s work)

So there you have it. That’s my perfect business day. So, what does yours look like, what should yours look like? Care to share?

Alexa - useful tool? Alexa - useful tool? - Hi Martin, Alexa is easier to manipulate at the early stages of a website than later on. You can't even get detailed stats from them unless you are in the top 100,000. I've had months where my traffic was up but my Alexa ranking was down so it is not a perfect system. It is also geared more towards the tech community. If you have a webpage that attracts tech / seo people then you are likely to have a better Alexa ranking because your visitors are more likely to have the toolbar installed. That being said, I still find it to be a valuable tool to measure how popular a website is doing. It is far from perfect but it gets to be more accurate as your site starts getting more popular and it's the best tool out there compared to the alternatives.
Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? - Search Engine Optimization (SEO) could be compared to a big popularity contest: A High School Computer Geek and a High School Football Captain who are trying to promote a party. The computer geek tells everyone in school & even hands out 100's of flyers about his party Friday night...what happens? his friends end up showing up and a few new people...even the new people leave right away because it is not what they are looking for. The High School Football Captain ends up just telling a few good buddies, and within hours the entire school not only knows about it, but everyone wants to come, and everyone does come & stay. One defenition of "optimize is "To make as perfect or effective as possibe." How effective are your article marketing campaigns? Could you be distributing content (that is what search engines index) more effectively? In a perfect world, who would you want promoting your website, web pages, and web content? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is determining this perfect & effective way to do this. Jeff
Re: Welcome New Moderators in Addition to Our Fine Team! Re: Welcome New Moderators in Addition to Our Fine Team! - Hello everyone, and Thanks for the introduction Ringo! This is going to be a great experience for me and for everyone in the community. I hope to learn a lot from you and I know there is something I can share with all of you. Past, Present, Future. Before I started my own business I worked in the north Canadian oilfields drilling for natural gas. I worked long hard hours and spent a month at a time away from home. It's when I started to burn out that I realized that there is more to it than wasting my life, secluded away from civilization and the people I cared for most. A friend of mine introduced me to a business opportunity which not only offered me the chance to fire my boss and walk away from a less than perfect lifestyle but it gave me the chance to make an income that was more than sufficient to support me and my fiance. I pounced on the opportunity like a cat on a mouse. Since then I have been working from home helping others break away from their "less than perfect situation" by mentoring them in the ways of marketing. I will continue on this path teaching, helping and coaching until I'm to old to use a computer. I feel honored to have this opportunity to share and grow with the community. I look forward to talking to you all. Dallas.
