Nothing goes so well with that first cup of coffee as having your biases confirmed!

In yesterday's Wall Street Journal ("In Search of Growth Leaders"), University of Virginia/Darden Graduate School of Business Prof Sean Carr, et al., lay out a growth model. There are, more or less, two flavors of companies:

The first sort, focused on avoiding downsides, treats customers "only as data," "manages risk through analysis," "places big bets, slowly," and frequently fails in new situations; alas, its rigidity and fearfulness increases through time in a vicious circle.

The second sort sees life as a "journey of learning." It treats customers "as people"—and constantly seeks new input through direct contact with those customers. The Type Two group "places small bets, quickly" and manages risk through hustle and an abiding bias for test-try-adjust-action. It is relatively more successful in novel situations—which in turn creates a virtuous circle through which a "growth mindset" becomes the raison d'ętre of the firm itself.

First thing first, which market segment are they targeting? Or are they in the same segment the previous magazine was. They also need to understand the trends, currently people read online magazines so they need a website. After that they need to develop the marketing mix, which will guide them in their marketing activities. This marketing mix will be made of 4 Ps, which are Product, Place,Price and Promotion. I will assume the magazine is the product, the first P, The Price is what is the role the price will play in the market, do they want premium price, or do they want to skim the market. The other P, they need to have, is the Place, this will help in having a strategy on where to place their magazines, this includes the websites, malls, newspaper stands etc. The final P they need to develop is the Promotion, this is the advertising , channels, websites, forums, blogs, name it. Once they have done that, they can sit down and wait for money to come but not without superior customer service, otherwise without all this, they are wasting their time and money.

These three will give you a rough estimate of the value of your idea. use the equation below with respect to the questions above to figure out the value of your idea. ((1 - (2.1 + 2.2)) X 3) You have alread identified major problems for your idea -- you have competition that is free! Computers are easy to hook to televisions, and it is becoming easier at very fast rate. (For free stuff other than skype, look up NetMeeting if you have Windows XP.) The video conferencing systems do a poor job of creating the feel of a physical presence. Even high dollar systems with dedicated internet bandwidth and extremely nice tracking video cameras do a poor job, especially for long distance runs. I have the experienced the disappointing performance of some of these systems on our campus. Video can not recreate the connection felt when in the same room with another person. Step 1, Quickly and roughly calculate the cost of the system you propose. Step 2, Compare that with what you think someone will pay and the cost of your current compeition. Step 3, Go / No-Go.
