Forget the Planner - Get a Plan!

When was the last time you took a vacation—not just a weeklong getaway to a luxury resort on some remote island, but actual time off from your job to do whatever you like? If it’s been longer than you can remember, you’re not alone.

Stephen Vicusi, author of On the Job: How to Make It in the Real World of Work, estimates that about 40 percent of American workers don’t take vacations even though their jobs give them time off. And a recent poll released by the Center for a New American Dream found that 88% of Americans agree that “working too many hours results in not having enough time to spend with families.”

The message is clear, but we’re not doing much about it. With so much to do in so little time these days, some of us struggle just to stay afloat—how can we possibly afford to give ourselves more time even if we knew where to find it?

The key to keeping up with your busy schedule and finding more fulfillment in the process is finding ways to better manage your life rather than your schedule. In order to create a better plan for your life, you must have compelling reasons that will drive you to follow through with your goals. You must determine how each individual task will bring you closer to what you really want in life—loving relationships, vibrant health, peace of mind, or financial freedom.

Tony initially created the RPM (Rapid Planning Method) system to help himself manage all of his growing priorities—family, work, health, contribution—in the beginning of his career, when he realized that the level of achievement he was experiencing in his professional life was costing him fulfillment in his personal life. By prompting him to answer questions like “What do I really want, and why do I want it?” or “What are my needs and how can I accomplish them?” Tony’s RPM system continues to help him get the results he wants while increasing his level of fulfillment.

Try implementing the RPM system in your own life to simplify your schedule and ultimately make more time for what matters most to you. Chances are you’ll find yourself getting more out of life and having more time for yourself while achieving at a level you never thought possible!

I recall one of my marketing teachers telling me that everyone he knew in his MBA program had lost their relationships during the process. The time commitment required from a full-time job and studying for an MBA had put so much strain on those people's relationships/marriages that they just fell a part.
