Lesson #1: Do Not Let Where You Have Been Determine Where You Are Going
“I’ve always wanted to be a star,” says Jameson. “I think my life is one everyone can relate to at one point or another in their own lives; and hopefully my surviving so many of the things I did will help them believe they can overcome anything as well.”
If Jameson had entered any other line of work besides adult entertainment, her life story would today be lauded by the public as a classic American success story. Still, as the millionaire that she has become today, Jameson’s life story is a tale of moving from rags to riches and overcoming tremendous obstacles along the way.
The details of Jameson’s early years are not only hard to grasp, but would hardly seem like those of a millionaire in the making. With a mother who died when she was just two years old, and an emotionally unavailable father, Jameson and her brother entered the world of hard drugs and alcohol. Moving around from town to town made it hard for the youngsters to make any solid friendships, so they turned to each other and LSD.
But drugs and alcohol are not so strange a story. Indeed, many a successful person has had their partying years that they would all too soon like to forget. Jameson’s tragedy, however, did not end there. In fact, she nearly lost her life when four boys beat and raped her during her family’s time spent in Montana. Years later, she was again raped by her live-in boyfriend’s uncle.
Jameson had originally wanted to be a television news anchor. “I used to practice with the TelePrompTer when I was young, because my father was a television producer,” she says. After her life began to take a downward turn, however, Jameson stumbled into the world of stripping, nude modeling, and adult videos. From there, the rest was history.
According to Jameson, however, while her early years might have been obstacles she had to overcome, she was in no way going to let them dictate her future. “Was I in this business because I was victimized or because I wanted to succeed at something?” she asks. “I examined it from every angle I could, and every time came to the same conclusion: that it didn't make a bit of difference…Whether it happened to me or not, I still would have become a porn star.”
Jameson might not have become the television news anchor that she originally wanted to be, but, she says, “at least I’m still on TV.” And, at the end of it all, she is happy with the way her life has turned out. “All I know is that when I lay my head down at night, I feel comfortable and I'm happy, and I guess that's all that really matters…. I don't allow any kind of unhappiness anymore. I've been through it all, and there's no need, at 32, to sit and be sad.”
