Lesson #4: Use Innovation To Break Through Your Limitations

Elon Musk Quote

Article Overview: “We are used to things improving every year; we are used to having a better cell phone next year than this year; a better lap top,” says Musk. “We are even used to some basic things, like we expect more from your car in next year’s model than last year’s model. But this is not the case in space; reliability and cost - those are the fundamental parameters of transportation - have not improved.”

Lesson #4: Use Innovation To Break Through Your Limitations

“We are used to things improving every year; we are used to having a better cell phone next year than this year; a better lap top,” says Musk. “We are even used to some basic things, like we expect more from your car in next year’s model than last year’s model. But this is not the case in space; reliability and cost - those are the fundamental parameters of transportation - have not improved.”

Space exploration is nothing new. Indeed, for decades, entrepreneurs and scientists alike have been in a race to explore and populate undiscovered areas of outer space. So why is Musk’s company, SpaceX, showing so much promise? Why do many experts believe that if anyone can have a serious impact, Musk can? The answer to those questions is the same reason behind the success of Musk’s first two companies, Zip2 and PayPal. Musk used innovation to break through his – and the rest of the world’s – limitations.

“Starting and growing a business is as much about the innovation, drive and determination of the people who do it as it is about the product they sell,” says Musk. That is why Musk sees little difference between the three different companies he founded; all were driven by Musk’s determination and drive to succeed and change the world, and all were based on being innovative. All three of Musk’s businesses did things that either no one else was doing yet, or doing them in a way that no body else had thought of yet. And that is why he was able to succeed where others fell by the wayside.

Before beginning to build his own rockets, Musk took a look at all of the ones that his predecessors and competitors had built before him. He looked at the technology and he looked at the design. He took what he thought was not working and he set out to fix it. As a result of the changes Musk made, he has been able to build rockets that are lower cost and higher performance.

The list of innovations and improvements Musk and his team made to their SpaceX rockets is long. They changed the engine, giving it the lowest possible cost choice of architecture, covering it with fireproof blankets, and improving its pump and injector. “So even if a fire develops, it can't really attack the particularly vulnerable locations like the pneumatic system or the avionics or the engine bay,” says Musk. “We want to be in the situation that even if a fire develops, the rocket just keeps going.”

They changed the rocket’s structure, giving it an inexpensive aluminum tank, and enabling it to stand un-pressurized on a launch pad in even extreme winds. They updated its avionics with the latest technology. They made a rocket that would be completely assembled in the SpaceX factory so that no army of workers would later be required at the launch site.

For Musk, however, one of the greatest innovations at SpaceX is its “ability to make almost any part of the rocket in house.” This, he says, gives it “a great deal of bargaining power with suppliers. We are never locked in to anyone.”

And so, just like he did with his two Internet companies, Musk is making sure that he has total control over his operations and can improve things where he sees fit. Those innovations are giving SpaceX its lifeline, and Musk a third chance at success.

Dan Kennedy Marketing Methods Dan Kennedy Marketing Methods - We haven't sent out the physical letter yet as the person owning the list wanted to make modifications to the letter that we knew would work well but the List owner had a point - it didn't reflect her personality so her clients would know it didn't come from her. Lesson learned for me. We're back to the drawing board with the list owner more involved in the development of the letter and emails. I should have known better being a Business Analyst in my day job that you never leave the end-user out. So Evan we haven't had the opportunity to test any of it yet but it's been a fun process for me to stand back and look at.

Re: Looking for partners to start career consulting business Re: Looking for partners to start career consulting business - Hi Mike, 1) I'm moving this to the Looking For section 2) I think a good start would be to seek out local, potential competing or related organizations/companies in your area. Universities, job centres, head hunters, HR professionals...etc. [quote:34k2gxrf]It will target professionals who want to start working at executives or higher level positions but lack necessary experience.[/quote:34k2gxrf] And I think it'll definitely help if you align your products/services with your target customer group. i.e. How do you plan to seek out this group? -------> Find the necessary talent that can accomplish this. i.e. Providing internship --------> Training in-house? Or training outsourced? Again, seek talent that aligns with your objectives. Break down what your business operations would be like, then seek the appropriate talent to cover that area. Of course, you don't want to give up too much equity by seeking out too many partners. Usually lower number of founders the more likely the start-up will survive. Good luck
Success Strategies Success Strategies - How to get the results you want now? Success Strategies and Action Steps I have used are: The Power of Choice Where you are at this present moment, is exactly perfect from the choices you have made. If you want to be somewhere else, you have to decide clearly what that is (your goal/outcome) and create action steps to achieve this. The Power of Focus The book "The Power of Focus" by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt, is one of my treasures in my Entrepreneur Library. If you focus on what you want versus what you do not want, your conscious and sub-conscious mind will direct attention to this. The movie, What the Bleep, Down the Rabbit Hole, explains this in detail about quantum physics and what we create in our lives. The Power of Commitment This is not about commitment to others. The first step is the commitment, your word, you make to yourself. Accountability and responsibility are additional success strategies and ingredients to creating the success, defined by you, that you want. The commitment to others reflects your integrity, your word and the team you work with. Co-workers, clients, yoru family, friends and community. Cash Comes from Creativity Cash Comes from Creativity - These days, income from your 9 to 5 job can only get you so far. Gas is gold and it seems all are bemoaning the effects of economic recession. The question foremost on everyone’s mind is this: how on earth can we survive this financial crisis? Before, money-making is defined as having enough capital to start a business --- that or you make sure you are employed by the richest and most benevolent boss on earth! Those days are over though--- you don’t always have to rely on savings/ capital or the generosity of other people to have sustainable income. All you need is yourself---and your ideas! That’s right. The new model for business is innovation: the ability to successfully exploit great ideas. Innovation brings income; creativity brings cash. We live in a world where almost every good or service is readily available. If you search a product on the internet for example, say laundry detergent, you are likely to come up with several hundreds of brands and variations of the same product. And with consumers nowadays being so fickle from the many choices available to them, your market can change their minds about their preferences in a matter of seconds. If you want to survive in the global marketplace you need to be able to do two things: stand out and think on your feet. Ask yourself: what can you offer the world that others do not? What would make things easier, more convenient or more sensational for today’s busy people? What are your simple solutions to everyday problems that deserve to be replicated? What is an outrageous idea you have that may actually work? Your multi-million money-making opportunity may be lying in quirky little things you take for granted. That effective hangover-remedy you concocted? May just be an affordable alternative to what’s on the shelves these days. That extra-special way you pack your kids’ lunches? May be taught via a webinar alongside with your other Martha Stewart-ish ways. Just look closely at what makes you unique and effective---and think sales. That’s money from your ideas.
