Henry R. Luce Quotes

I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.

Somehow, despite the greatest differences in temperaments and even in interests, somehow we had to work together. We were an organization. At the center of our lives — our job, our function — at that point everything we had belonged to each other.

When the Time came to decide who was editor, Brit Hadden just had to be it, so I took the business side.

I am all for titillating trivialities. I am all for the epic touch. I could almost say that everything in Time should be either titillating or epic or starkly, supercurtly factual.

Business, more than any other occupation, is a continual dealing with the future. It is a continual calculation, an instinctive exercise in foresight.

All our publications, all our activities, are successful. They are successful not only at the box office, but they are successful also in the opinion of a large part of mankind. This is a considerable consolation for our efforts over the years.

Time should make enemies and Life should make friends.

I want everyone to get used to the idea of what they call the Lucepapers without Luce.

I suggest that what we want to do is not to leave to posterity a great institution, but to leave behind a great tradition of journalism ably practiced in our time.
