From Shipping to Sports: Steinbrenner Makes His Move

Despite his entry in the world of sports, Steinbrenner remained loyal to his father’s company. In 1967, he oversaw the merger of Kinsman Shipping and the American Ship Building Company in a move that would firmly establish Steinbrenner’s place in the business world, and turn him into a multimillionaire overnight.

Meanwhile, Steinbrenner continued his foray into the sports industry. When his Cleveland Pipers partner resigned during a time of financial crisis, Steinbrenner still led his team to victory in the first half of the season. He then invited former Boston Celtics star Bill Sharman to replace his old partner. Together, the two led the Pipers to the American Basketball League championship in 1962.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond Steinbrenner’s control, the ABL folded soon after the win. Steinbrenner and his partners lost all of the money they had invested in the venture, and it took Steinbrenner several years to pay off his creditors.

After recovering, Steinbrenner renewed his commitment to the sports world and decided to dream even bigger than before. This time, in partnership with a group of investors, Steinbrenner purchased the New York Yankees for $8.7 million.

Before 1973, the Yankees had been struggling under the ownership of CBS. CBS Chairman William Paley made the announcement that he wanted to sell the club. Immediately, Steinbrenner’s name had come to mind.

“We plan absentee ownership as far as running the Yankees is concerned,” said Steinbrenner at the time. “We’re not going to pretend we’re something we aren’t. I’ll stick to building ships.” Little did Steinbrenner know just how involved in the sports franchise he was about to become.

Over the years, Steinbrenner revolutionized the entire sport by driving up the cost of baseball players and engaging in a stream of steady hiring/firing among players and managers alike, as well as very public feuding. “I'm really 95 percent Mr. Rogers, and only 5 percent Oscar the Grouch,” he once said. From 1982 to 1990, the Yankees had little to show for their massive bankroll.

In 1990, Steinbrenner caused further controversy by accepting a ban for life from the sport due to illicit dealings with a gambler. He was, however, reinstated just three years later and came back a noticeably more mature owner. Under new management, Steinbrenner helped bring the Yankees back to their prior glory.

Steinbrenner has been awarded the Flying Wedge, the highest honour of NCAA. A new Florida high school scheduled to open up in 2009 is to be named George Steinbrenner High School after his contributions. And, Legend’s Field, the Yankees Spring Training facility in Tampa has been renamed Steinbrenner Field in his honour.

Today, the New York Yankees remain a champion team under the ownership of Steinbrenner’s son, Hal. Still, Steinbrenner’s career remains the stuff of legends in New York. His current estimated net worth is $1.3 billion and although he remains largely out of the public eye, his presence in the team can still be felt both through his son and through his own lasting reputation.

Re: Discover 5 Traps of Internet Marketing that Derail Business Re: Discover 5 Traps of Internet Marketing that Derail Business - [quote="Donna":gj06obvi] I started working as a full time freelancer a couple of years ago and I have noticed that so many people think there is instant money to be made online. Donna[/quote:gj06obvi] This is true. Many years ago when I first started my SF webzine, my only ad partner at the time was Amazon.com. I confidently expected to get dozens of orders a day, and be a millionaire within a year without ever having to do lift a finger - after my initial articles had been published to the web. Of course it didnt' turn out like that at all, and if I'd been dependent on that zine to make a living wage, I'd've had to quit right then and there. Even when I started with Google Ad Sense I was also expecting to make money quite quickly... and it took that three or four years to get to a decent level. (And, as I keep pointing out, had I started with my Sports Zine first, all this might have been so different, as the topic of sports is probably 300% more popular than science fiction...) On the other hand, by persevering, I got a lot of experience in my chosen field, and was ready to do some good stuff once it occurred to me to go on the Sports kick....
Re: Management Processes? Re: Management Processes? - Great question Aaron. Like you and Kevin have indicated, we can get a lot done by creating a management process. I like to: Prioritize what I need to do in order of importance. Pick the top priority item. Brainstorm possible tasks. Pick a task and complete it. Move on to the next task. I find this helps break things down into manageable pieces. It also helps just to take small actions. [Link removed by forum admin]
Re: Stopping Drive-by Spam Re: Stopping Drive-by Spam - I've also noticed that in this and other forums. I wonder why they do it that way. Makes it easier to catch them. I suppose it's probably just laziness. I've even seen the same person spam the same thread multiple times one after another with the exact same post. I guess that just how stupid some of these spammers are!!!
How does one suggest improvements to inventions How does one suggest improvements to inventions - and get paid for them? I'm sure people write in and complain and suggest new features for various things they buy... and if those changes are implemented that's all well and good, but the person who made the suggestion for the improvment isn't going to get paid for it. How does one suggest these improvements - and get paid for them? ----long story One of the best things the PC did (at least, Dell) was to color code all their little plugs, so you know that the green plug goes into the green hole, the pink into the pink, etc. Makes setting up those things a heckuva lot easier! I was thinking that the same thing should be done for today's TVs! I've had a new TV for a few weeks, set up next to my computer because I like to work and watch TV at the same time. But I've got it set up in such a way that I can't see all the little buttons on the top of the screen, which are the buttons for Stop, Play, Eject (for the internal DVD) , the Volume up and down, and the Channel up and down. Of course, that wasn't a problem when my remote control worked, but for some reason it stopped working a couple of weeks ago. (Yes, I replaced the battery - no good). Since I have the TV so close to my computer it's no problem, I can reach out and touch the buttons... But because they're all the same color, I had to actually get up and look at them to make sure I was pressing the right button. I've solved that problem by attaching a bit of yellow paper to the Play button, and a bit of orange paper to the Volume Up button. Makes things a lot easier...
coach needs a coach coach needs a coach - Yes... I remember that my coach had a coach. Makes perfect sense. Plus you're getting more stimulation as to HOW to be a better coach.
