Lesson #3: “If you don’t have a lot of passion for it, you’re not gonna make it”

Trip Hawkins Quote

Article Overview: “I have probably the best personal collection of games you’re going to find anywhere,” admits Hawkins. “I’ve just been a nut for almost any form of software, but games especially whether it’s card games, board games, computer games, video games, I’ve just got a spectacular collection. And of course now I have four kids that are at different ages, so when we want to play, boy, we’ve just got a fantastic set of choices.”

Lesson #3: “If you don’t have a lot of passion for it, you’re not gonna make it”

"I have probably the best personal collection of games you're going to find anywhere," admits Hawkins. "I've just been a nut for almost any form of software, but games especially whether it's card games, board games, computer games, video games, I've just got a spectacular collection. And of course now I have four kids that are at different ages, so when we want to play, boy, we've just got a fantastic set of choices." Hawkins does not just run a video game publishing company, he is a devout game nut himself. It does not matter whether you are sitting down to play a round of gin rummy, or sweep the real estate markets of Monopoly, or even play his own MLSN Sports - Hawkins will be at the table. And above running any company, his first passion has always been games.

"I have to honestly say that I'm in business, but I basically just tolerate it," he says. "I don't really want to be in business per se. It's just that, in order for me to do what I enjoy doing and to really get it out there and to have it be as appreciated by as many people as it can be, it's got to be done in the context of a commercial, capitalist enterprise. And it's kind of a necessary evil."

For Hawkins, business is a necessary evil that he tolerates in order to pursue his real passion. "The real purpose of what I'm doing is the creative expression, seeing your ideas come to life," he says. "I love to see consumers having a great time and having all these people be really passionate about these new things the way I am."

His passion is such that his friends even like to joke with him about it. "My oldest friends have always said that the reason I started Electronic Arts was just to make games that I wanted to play myself... that Digital Chocolate is an excuse to make MLSN Sports Picks," he says. "And there's a lot truth in that. I mean I grew up wanting to make these sports simulations so I could play them myself."

That passion is the only thing that got Hawkins through the harder times in his journey as an entrepreneur, including his second company that went bankrupt. "You can't get anywhere without incredible passion, because if you're an entrepreneur, there's gonna be a lot of bumps in the road," he says. "A great artist has to do their art. There's nothing that can stop them from doing it. They just have to get it out there. It's the same thing for an entrepreneur. If you don't feel that way, then you're probably not really an entrepreneur."

As an entrepreneur, mistakes are inevitable, and change is constant. "If you don't have a lot of passion for it, you're not gonna make it," cautions Hawkins. "And that's, I think, the big test."

Re: We all have some special talents! Re: We all have some special talents! - Have you tried card counting in a casino? I bet you'd do wonderfully well. Go research it and make some money with your skill! On a more serious note, I believe we all have special talents as well. I also believe we all have that one 'passion' that drives us to succeed. It's about harnessing that passion in conjunction with our skills that make us successful.
Re: Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? Re: Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? - I agree with SHri, it really depends on the target audience and how much service you really need. if you are doing National campaign than you want a firm that has the National contacts. Lots of smaller companies dont have as many resources or connections. Many firms are going to a pay for performance model which I think will do the PR and advertising industry good. no more $5000 retainers for sending out a couple of press releases - no matter how well written or targeted! if they dont get picked up, they dont get paid. J[/quote:23enhep1] Those retainers were insane and from a lot of people I talk with, the company really wasn't earning it at all. Other firms earned every penny, but its easy for some people to get comfortable doing as little as possible and still taking those retainers. Pay for performance can help make people "hungry" - when they are "hungry", then tend to be more motivated. Shri
Dan Kennedy Marketing Methods Dan Kennedy Marketing Methods - We haven't sent out the physical letter yet as the person owning the list wanted to make modifications to the letter that we knew would work well but the List owner had a point - it didn't reflect her personality so her clients would know it didn't come from her. Lesson learned for me. We're back to the drawing board with the list owner more involved in the development of the letter and emails. I should have known better being a Business Analyst in my day job that you never leave the end-user out. So Evan we haven't had the opportunity to test any of it yet but it's been a fun process for me to stand back and look at.
