Lesson #5: “I feel very comfortable out there, being out on the frontier where it’s rough and unclear”

Trip Hawkins Quote

Article Overview: “I always find myself out on the leading edge of these new media, and since I’ve done it now for so long, I feel very comfortable out there, being out on the frontier where it’s rough and unclear and a lot of things have to be sorted out,” says Hawkins. “I don’t mind making that longer-term investment and figuring things out and waiting for it all to come around. And there’s always a lot of confusion in the beginning and different ways of thinking about it as a business. And that’s what I’ve always loved doing is being out there on the front, figuring that out for the first time.”

Lesson #5: “I feel very comfortable out there, being out on the frontier where it’s rough and unclear”

"I always find myself out on the leading edge of these new media, and since I've done it now for so long, I feel very comfortable out there, being out on the frontier where it's rough and unclear and a lot of things have to be sorted out," says Hawkins. "I don't mind making that longer-term investment and figuring things out and waiting for it all to come around. And there's always a lot of confusion in the beginning and different ways of thinking about it as a business. And that's what I've always loved doing is being out there on the front, figuring that out for the first time." Hawkins is a risk-seeking entrepreneur. If a new business venture is not risky, then it is not worthwhile according to Hawkins. After all, everything that is different entails taking a risk, and if it is not different, it is likely not going to succeed.

"Today, the new frontier is social computing, and you see it exploding on the Internet, and it's also about to explode on the mobile phone," he says. " Obviously on the Internet we have this succession where it's not enough to have YouTube, you've gotta have Google, and that doesn't prevent there from being a need for YouTube or MySpace, or Facebook or Neopets, there's always different expressions of these different communities that allow people to connect."

Social developments in mobile have been much slower to develop. "All we have really seen so far with the mobile phone, is text messaging," says Hawkins. "We're just really at the very starting point with mobile phones that are in fact a much larger number of computers on a much bigger and more ubiquitous network. I mean we have two billion people with these mobile phones today, it's gonna get to three billion pretty quickly here in the next year or two. Whereas with PCs we're talking about hundreds of millions, it's a much larger market with mobile phones."

That potential is why Hawkins has placed himself at the forefront of this industry. He is set on not just riding the wave, but paddling out into the ocean before the wave even hits.

"I think for the next 20-30 years this is gonna be the big trend in every dimension of computing, where people are getting more and more social value out of it," he says. "And what I wanna do is have the mobile phone turn into the hearth that's in your hand, and have people increasingly find new ways to depend on that device really connecting them with all these different social worlds."

This is the beginning of an exciting development in the mobile industry, and the reason why Hawkins was quick to launch his Digital Chocolate company for creating social mobile applications. As always, he remains out on the forefront because that is where the real magic happens.

I was going through some rough times in the past months, that was why I was not consistent. Thank God the rough times is gone and i am back. Tough times never last but tough people last.

Re: What would you be willing to do for a million dollars? - [quote="Mal Tindle":2q96wh9f]Hi members, Like others have said, yes a million dollars would be great but do I 'need' a million dollars then no. I would settle for enough to pay of my mortgage and have a comfortable life style going into future years and I suspect most people would feel the same. It's an old expression but a true one that the best things in life are free. Good health, happiness and your friends and family around you, all other things are a bonus. regards, Mal.[/quote:2q96wh9f] I am with you on this one Mal. To me just having enough money to live a comfortable life and do the things I want with my friends and family around me, would make me completely happy. MichelleJ
Re: Does it help to join business groups? Re: Does it help to join business groups? - Different groups can have a very different feel to them, so it's good to try out several. I was in a lunch group for a while that was very formal, and a bit expensive as you had to purchase the event ticket and the lunch. It was a small group, and they knew each other well. They were nice people, but there was really no opportunity for us to help each other -- more of a social thing really. I've also done chamber of commerce, or women's entrepreneur events. I always have a good time, but I haven't found many business leads that way -- most of the newer entrepreneurs often don't have the financial resources to hire others (at first anyway). I did get one big job back when I was a freelance writer from one of these events, however. I've met more clients through regular socializing surprisingly! Knowing a person through friends can make others feel more comfortable it seems.
