Hugh Hefner Quotes

The major civilizing force in the world is not religion, it is sex.

I invented the centerfold, though--both the term and the idea. I put a three-page foldout in the center of the book so people would open to it--and it was something sexy.

I had always been interested in publishing. I created my first penny newspaper when I was 10 years old. (I don't remember how much I made--if anything.) I did another one in seventh grade called the Pepper, which lasted for a quarter of a century. Later I created a little magazine called Shudder, about horror and mystery movies and radio shows and books. While I was in college, I edited a college humor magazine called Shaft, where I introduced a feature called Co-Ed of the Month.

I haven't a clue. I'm always struck by the people who think they do have a clue. It's perfectly clear to me that religion is a myth. It's something we have invented to explain the inexplicable. My religion and the spiritual side of my life come from a sense of connection to the humankind and nature on this planet and in the universe. I am in overwhelming awe of it all: It is so fantastic, so complex, so beyond comprehension. What does it all mean — if it has any meaning at all? But how can it all exist if it doesn't have some kind of meaning? I think anyone who suggests that they have the answer is motivated by the need to invent answers, because we have no such answers.

I urge one and all to live this life as if there is no reward in the afterlife, and do it in a moral way that makes it better for you and for those around you and leaves this world a little better place than when you found it.

Playboy isn't like the downscale, male bonding, beer-swilling phenomena that is being promoted now by (some men's magazines). My whole notion was the romantic connection between male and female.

Sex is the primary motivating factor in the course of human history and in the twentieth century it has emerged from the taboos and controversy that have surrounded it throughout the ages to claim its rightful place in society.

So unless you can turn sexual addiction on and off ...

Beauty is everywhere -- on the campus, in the office, living next door ... Nice girls like sex too -- it's a natural part of life. Don't be ashamed of it.

It's one thing to try to change the way of things. It's another thing to break the law. Always with Playboy, we tried to take the high road. It's the reason we've been able to succeed when others have failed.

But I think the opportunities are everywhere now. The changes in technology make all things possible. The Internet and all of that make it possible for people to start businesses of all kinds with much less capital than was once true. You can go into publishing by starting your own little Web site.

I remain very much connected to my childhood ... I have never been too jaded or too sophisticated -- it keeps me alive every day.

My success and my life are a direct reflection of the fact that I am living out a lot of men's fantasies. The best part of all is that they are my fantasies as well.

Certainly it is a life well-lived and I wouldn't trade places with anybody. My life has been so rewarding and so satisfying, I would be hesitant to change anything.

Playboy exploits sex the way Sports Illustrated exploits sports.
