When it comes to Calvin Klein clothes, less is definitely more – and more expensive. What started as a one man operation in 1968 has today become an iconic American fashion label with billions of dollars in sales each year. The company’s line of products has become so vast that the true Calvin Klein devotee can step outside their home wearing nothing but this one label from head to toe.
For almost four decades, this fashion house has accomplished something quite unique: it has consistently produced trendsetting designs, all the while refusing to waiver from its original vision of clean, classic and minimal clothing. Clean shapes and modern lines have been emphasized in every one of the company’s collections, which have become so universal in appeal that these designs are worn by everyone from the A-List of Hollywood to the street Joes of New York. While minimal in nature, the designs are also about the ‘more’ – more layers and more textures.
Today, the fashion house operates on par with the likes of Ralph Lauren and Donna Karen, but continues to distinguish itself in its designs. Most of its products come in neutral hues, with few frills, ruffles or other distractions. Collections are often strapless, form-fitting, clean-cut, and cropped. “I’ve never been one to see women in ruffles and all kind of fanciful apparel,” says Klein. “To me it’s just silly.” He has honed his style into one of the most recognized in the industry. Even the untrained eye is likely to recognize a CK jacket when they see it, while the company’s briefs are instantly identifiable even without the company’s logo sewn on.
Calvin Klein clothes are much more than just ‘the usual’ with a designer name attached. They are modern designs for a modern generation all too eager to see what the company comes out with next. Although its founder and namesake relieved himself in recent years of the day to day running of the company, its new designers have kept up the contemporary tone of Klein’s fashions.
Brazilian-born Francisco Costa, who began working with Klein before his departure in early 2002, recently assumed the role of creative director. He continues to create fashions in his boss’ tradition, with crisp, clean lines. However, as any designer is apt to do, he has also introduced his own trademarks into the more recent collections. These include geometric grids, bold strips of leather, and origami twists.
“Part of the wonderful thing about what we do in fashion is that it really can apply to so many forms of one’s lifestyle,” says Klein. To that end, he has applied his fashion styling to everything from dinnerware to bedding, all the while maintaining the same consistent vision he has kept up through his clothing collections.
Today, Calvin Klein clothes can be found throughout the world, in Calvin Klein stores themselves, as well as in the likes of Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Saks Fifth Avenue. They may not come cheap, but people will most certainly know what you’re wearing when you walk down the street.
