Lesson #2: “Don’t think about the money you don’t have”
When Wozniak first started designing computers, he did not have much to go on. He knew he could put sketches down on paper, and they seemed plausible enough, but he did not know how to get from point A to point B, building a real computer.
But Wozniak realized something early on - he did not necessarily need a lot to go on. Why couldn't his skills just be enough? And that is when Wozniak discovered another skill of his, one that would get him farther than perhaps any other in his life - the ability to make a lot from a little.
"My skill was that, if I know what I want for the end result - in those days it was a computer, in later days it might be a certain floppy disk that had to read and write some data - but if I knew what my end goal was, I know how to combinechipstogether very efficiently to get that goal done," says Wozniak. "Even if I've never designed anything before.
"My skills weren't that I knew how to design a floppy disk, I knew how to design a printer interface, I knew how to design a modem interface; it was that, when the time came and I had to get one done, I would design my own, fresh, without knowing how other people do it."
According to Wozniak, all of the best things that he did during his time at Apple came from (a) not having money, and (b) not having done it before, ever.
"Every single thing that we came out with that was really great, I'd never once done that thing in my life," he says. And that gave him theconfidenceto go forward with launching his own company, even when he had no desire or inclination to be a businessman.
"When you are a startup or an individual on your own, you don't have very much money, so the fewer parts you have to buy, the better," he says. "When you design with very few parts, everything is so clean and orderly you can understand it more deeply in your head, and that causes you to have fewer bugs. You live and sleep with every little detail of the product.
"Steve Jobs and I started with literally no money. No cars. The parts we used to create the Apple I were purchased on thirty days credit."
So, his advice for budding entrepreneurs worried about where they will find their capital? "Don't think about the money you don't have. Rather, what can you do with what you do have?"
That advice, however, comes with a caveat. "You'd better have the technology knowledge to do it," he says. "I really urge you not to think you can start a whole company and business with just ideas on paper, because you'll end up owning so few of those ideas. You have to create a working model, something that you can show people and demonstrate that it works, and then you can start building a future for it."

- [quote="writer-ros":1m5u2voq]I was very moved by this election. When you think that not so long ago blacks had virtually no rights - and now there is a black President. It just goes to show how things can change in a relatively short space of time.
I think this is a very positive step for the whole world.
BTW, does anyone else think there are some amazing similarities between this election and the fictional one shown in the fabulous TV series, West Wing, not so long ago? Is this art imitating life or life imitating art?

you are right Ros,we have to put an end to limiting ourselves by making excuses.Anything and everytihing is possible,Dont just wish it,dont just dream it,Exercute it by acting upon your DREAM.
Re: help wanted in u.k.
- Hi Brendan,
Please dont apologize for feeling like you dont know or understand enough business. At least you know you have some things to learn and are willing to do that.
One of the best things you can do write now is start studying business plans and learning about market research. You can find some amazing resources online and at the library. Before you spend the money on a patent you can be gathering crucial data and testing the viability of the product.
One of my favourite resources is a book called "The Art of the Start". Guy K. (I dont know how to spell his last name). You can also visit a local enterprise centre/business centre. I'm sure you have one close by. They can help you on a personal level to know what steps to take to start.
good luck. We are here - we just need to know how to best help. Thanks for writing back!
Re: Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm?
- I agree with SHri, it really depends on the target audience and how much service you really need.
if you are doing National campaign than you want a firm that has the National contacts. Lots of smaller companies dont have as many resources or connections.
Many firms are going to a pay for performance model which I think will do the PR and advertising industry good. no more $5000 retainers for sending out a couple of press releases - no matter how well written or targeted!
if they dont get picked up, they dont get paid.

Building an Advisory Board - Steps 5 & 6
- hello Again! I am happy so many of you are interested in this thread. It is a great idea to build an advisory board and one that I know will generate many results for you.
Step 5 & 6 are quite frankly housekeeping issues, but they are important.
5) Get the most out of your advisory board meetings.
Prepare meetings well in advance. Set an annual calendar and make sure everyone is committed to being there. Chose a site that is comfortable and free of distractions as well as has the amenities you need. We once held a meeting at my house, which was a nightmare with dogs, and cats wandering around, the phone constantly ringing and my husband and son showing up early. Never again!
Set an agenda with careful thought, get input on it and send any materials out well in advance of the meeting. You dont want your advisors reading stuff at the meeting. Meetings should be for good discussion, idea generation and action planning. Follow up the meeting with minutes and/or a formal action plan.
Dont be married to your clock but also make sure you run the meeting effectively and dont abuse people's time. If you say meetings end at 8pm - make sure you are on time. If you think you are going to run over, get everyone to agree to that in advance. (even if its 7:30 you could say, I think we need to spend more time on this tonight. does anyone have an issue with staying past our 8pm time for tonight?? if you have step 6 working good - you'll get honest feedback)
6) Ask for Honesty.
while honesty to me, should not be something you have to ask for, in some cases it pays to be really really clear about what honesty means to you and to the others in your group.
you have to allow everyone to express their thoughts and ideas, openly and frankly. this is no time to take things you dont like personally.
I like to ask my board members what their mistakes on a certain topic were. It helps me learn from them and not have to face it the hard way on my own.
If you foster open communication and honest feedback, focussing on problem solving and resolutions (not defending the mistake etc.) you will get further ahead than you even dream possible. Remove the EGO's from the room if you can.
And always remember, the board came together because they believe in you, your business and your integrity. Capitalize on it!
