From the plain and humble beginnings of his Mennonite family to becoming one of the richest men in America, Hershey’s passion for chocolate was matched by nothing except his love of children. Although he smoked between eight to ten cigars a day until his death in 1945, Hershey lived a long life, filled with both failure and success, lots of hard work and determination, and a concern for his fellow man. What was Hershey’s recipe for success?
He Cared For Others: Whether it was for his workers, his customers or needy children, Hershey found room both in his heart and his business plans to show his concern. From building schools and hospitals in the model town he built to creating the wealthiest K-12 school in the world, Hershey demonstrated that you didn’t need to be a greedy entrepreneur in order to be successful.
He Never Gave Up: Hershey was no stranger to failure. With two failed businesses under his belt and scores of personal disappointments, Hershey refused to surrender his dreams of owning a successful candy company. He traveled the country in search of whatever knowledge might help him and he retained the support of any family and friends he could. It was by learning from each failure and never losing faith that Hershey was finally able to see his dreams materialize.
He Provided Quality: If you bought a Hershey’s chocolate bar, you could rest assured that you were buying a quality candy and getting the most value for your money. Hershey’s reputation for providing high quality products was well known throughout the country and it was this reputation that served as his best form of advertising. He took a hands-on approach to his work and dedicated endless hours to perfecting his products. He also ensured that no quality was sacrificed with the introduction of mass production techniques.
He Blazed His Own Path: Hershey was a creative entrepreneur who was always on the lookout for new and innovative techniques for his company to embrace. From promotion to candy design, Hershey distinguished himself from his competitors and made his company stand out above the rest. He didn’t care how things had been done in the past; he was going to set off on a new course all his own.
He Was Stubborn: Not even Hershey’s wife, who was the love of his life, could dissuade him from making a decision once he had committed himself to it and made up his mind. He followed his gut instincts in making decisions and took full responsibility for them, accepting the risks and their consequences. His combination of courage, audacity and stubbornness were what made him the success he turned out to be.

Milton Hershey Video - Company towns have often been depicted as locations of worker exploitation. The 1950s song, Sixteen Tons, popularized by Tennessee Ernie Ford (and easily found on the web) reinforces that idea. Hershey, Pennsylvania had a different reputation, however. But it did not escape the labor unrest that swept the U.S. in the 1930s.
