Lesson #5: Be determined to prove people wrong

Mallya never wanted to go into business. He wanted to be a doctor and follow in his grandfather's footsteps. But when his father put his foot down and insisted he follow in his own footsteps and take over the family business, Mallya was left with little choice. "Just before my father died I had worked for three-and-a-half years in the United States. And I learned a lot during my experience there," recalls Mallya. "So you know, I was termed a playboy, I was termed flamboyant, and yes, everybody thought that I'd fritter away what I had inherited. But I was determined to prove people wrong."

Part of proving people wrong for Mallya meant distancing himself from his father's money and showing people he could not only support himself, but that he could make even more than his father ever did.

"You know, I also have some low self-esteem," he says. "But more importantly, the biggest single moment of joy in my mind was when I bought the worldwide Berger Paints group in 1988, then I sold it in 1996 after successfully floating it on the London, Singapore stock markets. And when I sold it, I made, I think a profit of 66 million dollars."

The moment was pivotal in Mallya's career because for once he could say it was all of his own doing. "I went to my mother and I said, I earned this money, I did not inherit it," he says. "Now if I buy a yacht, a plane or a car, nobody's gonna question me about it."

Now that he has proven himself as a solid businessman, Mallya is enjoying running things on his own terms, instead of for others.

"I go with the flow, really. I love what I do," he says. "To me, work is not stress. I don't say, Thank God it's Friday and I'm looking forward to the weekend or I'm looking forward to a vacation. I come back from Europe at two o'clock in the morning and I'm looking around for my secretary at the airport to show me my mail and to tell me what's going on. Because I find what I do very exciting, so it's no stress at all. It's just non-stop excitement. Sure, you have a few problems and challenges along the way, but I have never found those to be sort of a dampener."

Being the boss also has its perks, says Mallya. "I can choose to take time off when I want, but I just enjoy what I do so much. My body tells me when to slow down. Trust me, I'm built like a tank. I've got a lot of energy, I can go many late nights in a row. But you know, when I feel that I need to get a good night's sleep or maybe just chill for a day or two I just do it, and everybody around me who works with me appreciates and realizes that."

Finance and the Disabiled Entrepreneurs Advice Needed Finance and the Disabiled Entrepreneurs Advice Needed - Need advice from someone who has been in my situation before. One thing is, we have been financing my adventure. It is not cheep and in this group you all understand this!! Not only did I start up my business of photography, but got into land as well. I got into land for the opportunity was there and I took it! Now just yesterday I was asked if I wanted another 40 acres on top of the 20 acres.... this I feel can wait? My thought pattern has been and still is to prove to the finance establishments that I produce what people want. I make it myself, that is my photography. I also want to prove to these establishments that I am worth investing in. Now comes the part that I am just not sure of and need advice on. I called the government and had a very lengthy conversation about the disability program I am on. What can or cant I do on the program, if it is a program that I can get kicked off of etc.. My goal is to make, in profits over what I get in disability. I am working very hard at this. This goal of mine is to prove to myself that I can do it no matter what program I am on. The government claims I can make whatever I can. I can own whatever. I am disabled, will always be disabled and the federal disability judge has determined this. BUT the state has already slapped my hands for trying and I do not get their help. I do not understand the states stance on this. To be totally self sufficient I need help. I try very hard to overcome my health problems, but health is health. Now will the financial establishments see me being disabled a bad thing? I have never been into grants, but maybe that is a route to go? What do you think?
Dropped Out Of School To Startup! Dropped Out Of School To Startup! - I wanted to announce it here first that I dropped out of my university program to start my own business! I finished reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad and some of the other success stories of Bill Gates and Michael Dell and now it's my turn! I know my business idea is better than everyone else in my industry and I'm going to prove everyone wrong. Does anybody have other drop out stories of big entrepreneurs that you can share with me? Thanks!!! It's day #1!
Re: Are we defined by what we do for a living? Re: Are we defined by what we do for a living? - It's interesting, but telling people you're an entrepreneur usually has a negative stigma attached to it. i.e. people usually think it means you're unemployed and working out of your parents' basement. So a better question might be, who are we as individuals? Is that just determined by our unique personalities?
Re: What or Who Sparks Your Business Interest Re: What or Who Sparks Your Business Interest - This is a nice thread, and I love reading all the stories. For me it started with the dream of owning my own business, I wanted my own store, selling puzzles, jigsaws, etc. It was too expansive to start and it is not a very successful niche here. So I decided to check other niches and then came the internet marketing option. The dream of being wealthy was always a dream and my parents always told me that to be rich you have to be born into a rich family or be a thief. I decided to prove them wrong.
Re: A lawyer drops a client? Re: A lawyer drops a client? - [quote="OmnivoreInk":1konty4s][quote:1konty4s]I forwarded these messages to his attorney, she dropped him.[/quote:1konty4s] I'm surprised but gratified to learn a lawyer would actually drop a client whom she discovers to be in the wrong. Usually they just bear down harder to work around/hide their clients guilt![/quote:1konty4s] I think it was financial - not a bout with her conscience. He was very clear that he was determined not to pay her and it was assumed I would lose and I would be paying her fees. Shri
