They may not win the Nobel Prize for Literature, but shrewdly composed Jennifer Lopez lyrics are becoming something of an anthem for a new generation of youth in the new millennium. With the 2002 release of “This is Me…Then”, her lyrics began to come into their own; this was the first CD on which the Golden Globe-nominated actress and Grammy Award-nominated singer penned her own fair share of the songs. It was also the first CD not to feature the sort of get-up-and-dance song for which she has become well known. Tracks such as “Dear Ben” and “Again” demonstrate her softer sugar-and-spice side, written by a woman seemingly very much in love. Damn, finally!” On the other hand, tracks like “Jenny from the Block” showcases the diva’s hip-hop talent, while “Baby I Love U” takes on a cooler, jazzier feel.
Despite their personal nature, not everybody has been too easily impressed by her writing abilities. Indeed, with stories that talk about being “big pimped” around town with men, to relatively unoriginal lines that read, “Baby I love you/Baby I need you/I gotta have you/Can’t be without you”, critics have labeled her songs everything from ‘corny’ and ‘silly’, to ‘unconvincing’ and ‘dismissible’.
However, what Jennifer Lopez lyrics lack in creativity, most critics suggest the singer makes up for in her vocal ability and through the often catchy or soothing rhythms of her tracks. The ability of Jennifer Lopez lyrics to combine the artist’s Latin heritage with the hip-hop and R&B music she grew up listening to is also often a point of discussion, and one which sets her apart from her peers in the music industry. Covering everything from love and dating to having ambition and pursuing a career, Jennifer Lopez lyrics are a poetic representation of the singer’s life.
There may not be a consensus on the quality of her songs but the impact they have had on the American music industry is definite. Today, this Latin diva is ranked as the richest Latin American in Hollywood by Forbes magazine. Time Inc.’s People en Español also deemed her the most influential Hispanic entertainer in the country. And, her songs are no longer the only thing about the singer that is getting people talking.
Stepping outside of the music industry, Jennifer Lopez has recently been venturing into the movie industry, acting in such hits as “Out of Sight” and “Angel Eyes”. She also owns a clothing line, a cosmetics line, fragrances, a production company and a restaurant. Jennifer Lopez lyrics might come under frequent criticism for their lack of depth or seriousness, but the same thing cannot be said for this diva’s career.
