The Coffee King: Howard Schultz is Born

“I wanted to be in charge of my own destiny,” says Howard Schultz. “It may be a weakness in me: I'm always wondering what I'll do next. Enough is never enough.” Schultz used this weakness to his advantage, taking the U.S. by storm with his vision of a coffee shop the likes of which the country had never seen before. Today, as a so-called ‘third home’, Starbucks has revolutionized not only the coffee industry but also society at large.

“It wasn't until I discovered Starbucks that I realized what it means when your work truly captures your heart and your imagination,” said Schultz.

“You have to have a great tolerance for pain!” exclaims Schultz in reference to the qualities that make a successful entrepreneur. “You have to work so hard and have so much enthusiasm for one thing that most other things in your life have to be sacrificed.”

Lesson #2: Dream Big

In his book “Pour Your Heart into it: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time,” Schultz put forward this challenge to fellow business owners: “Care more than others think wise. Risk more than others think safe. Dream more than others think practical. Expect more than others think possible.”

Lesson #3: Build a Strong Brand

“Starbucks represents something beyond a cup of coffee,” says Schultz. “While we are a coffee company at heart, Starbucks provides much more than the best cup of coffee – we offer a community gathering place where people come together to connect and discover new things. We are always looking for innovative ways to surprise and delight our customers.”

Lesson #4: Pull For Your People

“The way we have built our company by including the success of the company with everyone in it and not leaving our people behind is a great example of building a business the right way,” says Schultz. “We’re not ever going to turn our backs on our [employees].”

Lesson #5: Know When to Get Help

“If you’re building an organization, you quickly realize that you can’t do it alone,” says Schultz. “You’ll build a much stronger company if you can find a colleague you trust absolutely, someone who brings different strengths to the mix but who still shares your values.”

Grounds for Success: How Schultz Reached the Top

“I can’t give you any secret recipe for success, any foolproof plan for making it in the world of business,” says Schultz. “But my own experience suggests that it is possible to start from nothing and achieve even beyond your dreams.”

The Howard Schultz bio is not necessarily a story of innovation. After all, Howard Schultz was not the first person to ever think of establishing gourmet coffee bars, where coffee was served in cups, not beans, and people could come to meet and relax; he had gotten the idea after visiting Milan, Italy, on a family vacation. Nor was Howard Schultz the original founder of Starbucks; he built upon the success of three men and their coffeehouse in Seattle, Washington.
