There are few celebrities on TV today who have a reputation that matches that of American Idol creator Simon Cowell. Indeed, much of America has developed a love-hate relationship with this Sony/BMG Record Executive for the brutal honesty with which he dishes out his comments to would-be American Idols. But, love him or hate him, Simon Cowell insults have become a large part of why people tune in week after week to watch the show.
If there is anything this Idol judge hates most, it is political correctness. “I don’t like a rule driven life and I hate the fact that you can’t criticize a fat person,” he says. A quick glance over some of the worst insults he has hurled is evidence of that fact. From telling contestants that they are deaf and that they sound like they belong in a karaoke bar to calling one “The Incredible Hulk’s wife”, Cowell doesn’t hold anything back in giving his reviews. He even once told a contestant, “You take singing lessons? Do you have a lawyer? Get a lawyer and sue your teacher.”
There is speculation by many viewers and critics of the show that suggests he simply puts on the cruel act in order to heighten the drama of the show. However, he insists that what you see is what you get, both on screen and off. In fact, the infamous jabs supposedly began when the award-winning music producer was just fours old: he told his mother that her white pillbox hat made her look like a poodle. That seems to have been a sign of things to come.
In a popular online video montage of the Top Ten Worst Simon Cowell Insults, “You have invented a new form of torture” makes the list. So too does his comment to one Idol hopeful to “Shave off your beard and wear a dress. You would be a great female impersonator.” Another fan favourite is his comment, “If your lifeguard duties were as good as your singing, a lot of people would be drowning.”
And, to those viewers who find themselves sympathizing with the contestants, this judge’s abuse isn’t just limited to the young singers auditioning before him. He often turns his barbs to the very people sitting beside him, fellow judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. Calling Abdul his “poodle” and saying, “You sit your poodle on your lap, you stroke it and it will lick your face and we’re both happy,” Cowell proves that his attacks have no limits.
Despite the criticism he has weathered for what have now become infamous and widely publicized Simon Cowell insults, this entrepreneur feels little remorse for his comments. While the extreme gibes might often elicit an apology from Cowell, he claims, “I haven’t done anything particularly harsh. Harshness to me is giving somebody false hopes and not following through. That’s harsh. Telling some guy or girl who’s got zero talent that they have zero talent actually is a kindness.”
