Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul
She is one of the most recognized pop singers and choreographers in the modern music industry. He is an award-winning executive with Sony/BMG Records who has helped shaped artists that together have achieved sales of more than 100 million. Together, Simon Cowell and Paul Abdul make up two thirds of the judging panel on the hugely successful “American Idol” television show.
Many think “American Idol” is a competition for those who want to become pop sensations, a chance for young singers and dancers to become superstars in the footsteps of past Idol winner and double platinum certified Kelly Clarkson. But, those who believe that would be mistaken. In recent years, “American Idol” has become more about the drama between the two judges than the competition they are judging. With rumours swirling that suggest everything from the fact that the two are secretly in love to they really hate each other, viewers tune in each week to witness the latest round of barbs the duo throws at each other.
The judging style of both the two differs greatly. Whereas Abdul usually gives positive feedback, even when she can’t stand or even recognize the songs being sung to her by eager contestants, Cowell is known for his brutal honesty. He refuses to hold back whatever he is thinking, a fact that has created a love-hate relationship between him and most of America.
However, it isn’t so much what Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul say to the contestants that continues to make the news the day after the show airs. Rather, it is the chemistry between the two that has viewers itching for more. They have kissed and they have sat on each other’s laps, but they have also fought, cried, and exchanged air punches. So, what exactly is going on between the two?
In actual fact, it seems that the two do really like each other. “I hated her guts to start with,” says Cowell. “Then she got to trust me. I look after her. We do fancy each other.” Meanwhile, Abdul says of her “American Idol” co-star, “It’s one of those love/hate relationships…Simon grows on me like a fungus or like a zit that won’t pop. But the thing is now I enjoy him.”
So, is all the insult throwing back and forth between each other purely staged? Are they simply savvy as to what viewers want to see between them and they merely play the parts in acting that out? Or is there more to the story? Is there a deep-seated hatred or love between the two? Perhaps there is an un-reconciled one that is waiting to be explored?
Whatever the case, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul have added an extra dimension of drama to “American Idol.” And, for all their jokes and name-calling, American audiences have come to know and love the pair, and to expect nothing less from them in their living rooms each week.
