The Chaordic Entrepreneur: How Dee Hock Achieved Success
Even if you have not heard of him, chances are your wallet is very
grateful to Dee Hock. The founder and former CEO of VISA, Hock was no ordinary
entrepreneur. He left the business world at the top of his success to focus on
creating a new organization theory centered around chaordic organizations.
Today, his business and theoretical legacy live on.
Hiring: Make no mistake, Hock had several strengths and he knew what they were.
But in order for his company to achieve success, Hock also knew that he would
have to compensate for his weaknesses. That is why in making his hiring
decisions, he not only looked for people that had integrity, passion and
capacity, but for people who had strengths where he himself lacked.
Leadership: Hock was the dream boss – once he had made the commitment to bring
someone on his team, he gave all of those around him the freedom to do what
they do best. Leadership, for Hock, was not about controlling people and
forcing them to do their tasks. It was about inspiring people to want to do the
best job they could.
Creativity: If there is one thing Hock will always be remembered for, it is his
creative thinking. He refused to operate according to the status quo, and
challenged the very principles by which companies ran themselves. After all, he
said, “Failure is not to be feared. It is from failure that most growth comes;
provided that one can recognize it, admit it, learn from it, rise about it, and
try again.”
Purpose: Hock was an atypical businessman in that he could not be motivated by
money. He believed that purpose always had to have principal. That is why he
left VISA in 1984, because he felt he had achieved his true purposes – proving
the effectiveness of his concepts of organization.
Participation: The very way in which Hock organized VISA was one of the key reasons
for success at a time when the industry was crashing down around it. By
encouraging participation, ownership, and even competition, Hock created a new
“fractal system” that was indeed fully functional.
Hock was a pioneer behind a new
breed of organization, one that operated according to the joint principles of
chaos and order.
“We are at that very point in
time when a 400-year-old age is dying and another is struggling to be born - a
shifting of culture, science, society, and institutions enormously greater than
the world has ever experienced,” he said. “Ahead, the possibility of the
regeneration of individuality, liberty, community, andethicssuch as the world
has never known, and a harmony with nature, with one another, and with the
divine intelligence such as the world has never dreamed.”
Hock enjoyed pushing the
boundaries and living on the edge of his theories. His legacy in the form of VISA
and organizational theory live on, and continue to operate the way in which the
world does business today.

- Hi Evan,
I have a new suggestion for "Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time" and a suggestion for your Learning from the Masters series:
1. Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time = Christopher Columbus:
"... he saw the possibility of treasure and commerce where others saw only danger. He committed so wholeheartedly to that vision that not even dozens of rejections and ongoing penury could dissuade him from pursuing a journey to Asia via the West. He built on his technical strengths as a seaman to plan a viable journey and eventually marshal an expedition."

I bought Hoenig's book about 10 years ago but couldn't make head or tail of it then... reading it now and finding it inspirational...
2. Nomination for Learning from the Masters video: Dee Hock, founder of VISA. (Source = Hoenig.)
Re: Alexa Ranking Goals
- Thanks for the monthly update Evan! And congrats to everyone who has gained.
Also, not that I am worried about it, but I am showing my site as under 265,000 right now so that would put me in the Goal Achieved category instead of the gaining momentum!
I'll make my new goal 200,000 for next month.

Success Strategies
- How to get the results you want now?
Success Strategies and Action Steps I have used are:
The Power of Choice
Where you are at this present moment, is exactly perfect from the choices you have made. If you want to be somewhere else, you have to decide clearly what that is (your goal/outcome) and create action steps to achieve this.
The Power of Focus
The book "The Power of Focus" by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt, is one of my treasures in my Entrepreneur Library. If you focus on what you want versus what you do not want, your conscious and sub-conscious mind will direct attention to this. The movie, What the Bleep, Down the Rabbit Hole, explains this in detail about quantum physics and what we create in our lives.
The Power of Commitment
This is not about commitment to others. The first step is the commitment, your word, you make to yourself. Accountability and responsibility are additional success strategies and ingredients to creating the success, defined by you, that you want. The commitment to others reflects your integrity, your word and the team you work with. Co-workers, clients, yoru family, friends and community.
