In 1972, Lamborghini sold his tractor company to a subsidiary of Same Duetz-Fahr Group and the heating and air conditioning company went out of business. He found that operating a high-performance automotive manufacturing company came at a cost and eventually sold controlling interest of Automobili Lamborghini in 1972 and two years later his interest in the company to Audi, but he had done everything he set out to do. He had made his point to Enzo Ferrari and bested him with the Lamborghini automobiles.
“One day in Modena I was entering a restaurant when I recognized Ferrari sitting at one of the tables. As I passed I tried to greet him, but he turned his head away and pretended to be talking to the person next to him. He was ignoring me!” Lamborghini would go on to say, “Ferrari never spoke to me again. He was a great man, I admit, but it was so very easy to upset him.”
Lamborghini would return to his farming roots and retire to a 750 acre estate where he would start growing grapes and producing wine, like his parents taught when he was younger. Even though he had sold his car company and tractor company, he continued to stay busy. He concentrated on the farm and got into golfing, eventually building his own golf course.
“Golf has a big future. The right sport for the right people,” he would say. Again, his prediction was right. He continued to learn new things and do those things his way, even when it came to golf. “I looked at more than 40 golf courses all over the world, from California to Japan. Now I know how to do it myself.”
Through all the aggravation of running a business, Lamborghini still had the instincts and knowledge to out perform even the best at their own game. His love of machinery and intuitive ideas made him a multimillionaire. At the same time, his experience with machines would make his designs legendary. Without him, Automobili Lamborghini almost went out of business in the late 1970s, but the company he created out of spite continues to manufacture cars that are considered perfection by many.
“Luxury sports cars did not offer what people were wanting or paying for, so I concentrated on what people really wanted from a high-performance sports car,” Lamborghini would always say. This is exactly what he did, build a car that everyone wants and is worth paying for.
Almost all the companies Lamborghini started still operate today in one form or another, even if he is not at the helm. He remarried at the age of 58 and had a daughter, he already had a son from his first marriage to carry on his name and now he had a young daughter he could enjoy as he got older. Lamborghini would die in 1993, when he was 76 years old, of a heart attack. However, the Lamborghini legend continues.
Everyone seems to have a different story about why he started his car company, but Lamborghini summed up what a business person should be in one famous quote about himself, “A normal chap, a man who likes creating things. A good worker in the morning, and a man who likes enjoying himself in the afternoon.”
