Hello Forum members!
Today, Darren Rowse from ProBlogger published a guest post that I wrote for his blog (if you're not familiar with ProBlogger, it's the top blog that helps people become professional bloggers - it's at the top of my list of blogs I follow on a daily basis)
You can check out the post at http://www.problogger.net/archives/2008/02/28/how-to-build-22938-links-to-your-blog/ - feel free to leave a comment about it if you enjoy it - if we get enough positive comments I might be invited back to contribute again!
Thank you in advance!

Not only did I find your article informative, but your story about Wikipedia also resonated - as I've put links to good articles up there, only to see them removed by tinpot little dictators who work to some weird agenda. It should be quite easy to distinguish between spam links and links of value, but apparently they can't do it!
I see you've had 45 glowing responses thanking you for the info provided in your article.
Seems to me you're a lock to be invited to write for them again!

Thanks for the post Barbara! I wrote back in my response:
the trick with Wikipedia is that the link has to be of genuine value. If it’s obviously just a related link then you’ll get removed. If it’s adding serious value to the post then it’s more likely to stay on - but even then you can have an overbearing administrator who removes you.
I’ve also found more luck with less popular pages than the ones that are constantly being update. Chances are you can add more value to a page that hasn’t had as much work and the link will stay.
Good luck!

Boy, that was a winner wasn't it? Racking up over 40 comments deserves a big pat on the back. The article was a home run because of a few factors that I can see -
1) a great headline
2) helpful content
3) interesting subject for webmasters / bloggers
4) 7 ways to 'get it done'
And last but not least, your engaging writing style. Well done.

Evan,
You're a smart man... your site lives by what you practice.
Here is another post relating to how to get links to your website/blog by legendary Seth Godin.
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog ... _traf.html
Not to get sidetrack though, just add more value to your post I thought this article would enhance what you brought up.

Thanks Takuya - it's a great list! I'll probably be coming back to it as I continue writing!

Tell me, by adding a comment, many of which I guess have links back to their own blogs, I can't see how valuable those links are as the page-rank of the blog page is non-existent.
I do realize that you might get clicks back to your site from your posting, but the backlinks are probably no-follow anyway.
Any ideas?
Regards
Martin

Really? I wasn't aware of the nofollow attribute in those links... is that common?
My impression was that all the backlinking between blogs and 'comments' was the driving force to the better SE ranking that blogs seem to get...

Martin - I wouldn't rule out interior links. They may appear as 0 Page Rank because they just came online but over time they will gain PR. That Seth Godin inside post that Takuya sent is a Page Rank 5 now.
Russell - Most blogs carry the nofollow link. You should check it out before posting a comment if you're doing it for SEO reasons. You can download a plugin for firefox that tells you which links are nofollow but another way to find out is to go to view --> page source and look next to the external links on the blog comments. If it says "no follow" next to them then Google doesn't count it as a link. Some forums also do "no follow" when you put your website in your signature (mine don't) so you want to check it out before getting too involved.

Hi Russell/Evan
I'm currently taking a look at the free offerings from Fast Blog Finder and Comment Kahuna, which find relevant blogs for your keywords/phrases and sort them into no follow links as well, so that you can be picky about where you spend your time posting (they also give the PR as well).
It can be a bit slow wading through some of these, but definitely a timesaver.
I don't have links with me right now, but if you Google them, I feel sure that you will come up trumps!
Hope this helps
Regards
Martin

This isn't why you posted the info, but I spend a lot of time searching for appropriate blogs - will have to try these out to see if they help I have a full list of keywords for each author and their books - so it could....

Thank you for your support everyone! The responses were so overwhelming (over 80 comments) that Darren posted another guest post that I wrote on what Bloggers can learn from Sony's success:
