Hi Andy,
Great Article - I am using FaceBook now as part of my internet marketing strategy but like anything it is a lot of work to get right. I think I'll give the marketplace a shot and see if I get any results.

Thank you for sharing. I haven't gotten onto Facebook, but I read an interesting article about the Facebook participant demographics. It seems like its worth the time and effort
Does anyone have info to share about Facebook? Any suggestions or tips from people who are making it work?

Hi Shri,
Antony Bruno reports that "A month ago, iLike was just another online music community struggling for relevancy in an increasingly crowded market.
Today, it's the fastest-growing digital music service on the Internet, registering 1 million new users per week and fielding information requests from record labels every half-hour.
The difference is Facebook...
THE OLD WAY
Before teaming with Facebook, iLike required users to visit the iLike site, set up a profile and then try to match friends in their e-mail contact list to existing iLike members. New users had to sort through a massive database of artists to tell the iLike service which artists and music they prefer. Then they needed to e-mail their friends and convince them to join as well in order to share music recommendations.
iLike first went live in October; through May it attracted about 3 million users. Then the company made a version of the service for Facebook. Within three weeks, that incarnation signed up 3.7 million users, and continues to add about 1 million per week, far overshadowing the original Web site.
'iLike is actually better on Facebook than as a stand-alone application,' iLike CEO Ali Partovi said. 'It's a little sad to have to admit that your own Web site isn't as good as the thing you build for Facebook, (but) there's a community already there. That's impossible to re-create on your own.'

Well, I decided to go for it... but I doubt if it will do me any good.
It seems to be purely a social site - people looking for relationships with other people, instead of a business site. (I don't have a network of friends to invite to look at it, either...)
Someone (I throw this out to everyone here, free of charge) should design such a site but aimed strictly at business people. Instead of favorite books, movies, tv shows, etc. list their skills and business interests...
Anyway, I've posted a few ads in the marketplace section...and it's only been a couple of hours, I'll see what happens in the next week or so...

I think the interest in Facebook is the social aspect as well as their 'favorite books, movies, tv shows'.
I'd like to understand exactly what I need to do to bring value to my business in a 'dummies' version - any ideas anyone?

What we really need is for someone to create a seminar explaining how to use Facebook for business. Some people do it well, but I can't figure it out either. Anyway, I've posted a few ads in the marketplace section...and it's only been a couple of hours, I'll see what happens in the next week or so...
I've done the same and even paid the $1 for a sponsored listing and another $1 for a flyer - let's see if it works.
A friend of mine, Daniel at BizLaunch, uses Facebook well. He has created a group for Entrepreneurs. Then as people join the group he invited them to be friends. Now whenever they have free seminars or events he invites all of his 'friends'. Using this method has helped them increase the seminar attendance dramatically.

Some interesting points have been made here. Thanks for staring this thread Andy! I haven't yet created a profile but will get on it as an experiment to see what results can be created. I'll report back as I see some results.
Update: I created my profile - you can add me by searching for Evan Carmichael.

He has created a group for Entrepreneurs.
I'll see if I can't create a group for fans of science fiction.
The problem with that is anyone on the web who's a science fiction fan already has several well-established places to hang out 'internet-wise.'
But, we'll give it a try.

Just make sure to not make the group a regional group - I did that with my Cheap Training at Great Prices group and can only invite friends from my Toronto Network to join.

I know it's only been 4 days (I created my Facebook account on Friday afternoon), but this has been a bust for me. But then, I knew it would be. I have no network of friends to ask to join, and everyone there seems to be in their teens and early 20s, just looking for other young people to go out and drink with.
I put an announcement in the Marketing section of my network (Norfolk) saying I was looking for SF reviewers, and have gotten 2 responses so far, neither from anyone who seemed to have any "get up and go."
But of course my hope is that someone with a lot of friends who likes SF will agree to become a reviewer, and announce their reviews to their friends each time they appear, so said friends will visit the page, see the ads, and buy stuff...
But I'm not sanguine...

I have a little side businesses delivering Sheesha/Hookah (water smoking pipe - tobacco) to students at my university - McMaster. I started it just for fun, putting two things that I like together. but being a university student and already involved in facebook, i made a group advertising the service. I had freinds invite freinds, and even though I currently have around 100 people on the group. During the school year i deliver about one every one or two nights, and all the business is strictly through this group. So for me, facebook has done well. When school starts again the summer, I am going to be revamping my marketing strategy through tables set up on campus, and through a wide distribution of flyers, all leading people to this facebook group. because as people join the group, they're freinds see they've joined their group and automatically see what is about and its great for viral effectiveness.
Search some groups out there, theres one called Canadian Entrepreneurs. And another one called Facebook for Business which you guys might find an interest in.

Thanks Azima - that's a great story!
Is groups the best way to do it? Thus far I have just been using my profile to show updates.

I think groups are a very good way to do it. Through your profile, only people who are your freinds will see it. But if you create a group, and have your friends invite their friends and so on and so on you can see the effect.
Do you mind me asking, what are you trying to advertise through facebook? Is it the Evancarmichael.com, or another service? I have done some marketing and am pretty used to facebook and know it in and out and maybe can be of some help.
I have another story: I made a group for my clients barbershop in windsor once also. He was getting about 3 customers in per day. Then I made the group, after 2 weeks, we had 200 members, and the people coming in the shop were doubled. We don't know if it was just the facebook group or something else, but it definitely had a part to do with it because of the number of people telling me how good the place was.

I had a contact yesterday from someone who had me in their Outlook folder, so that may be a way of increasing the number of friends you have - it will with me when I get round to working out how to do it (after setting up my EvanChannel - see anoyher thread!).
After all, it's a bit sad not to seem to have any friends!!!
I've also gone to the marketplace and set up a couiple of products and there have been a couple of enquiries there too. I feel that this has a bit of mileage, so I used $4 of marketing on each - since, with the value of the £ to the $, it's a steal!
