Rejection…Not Once, But Twice!

If you are the owner of your own business, or have a sales role within your company, then surely you have dealt with rejection.

As Former VP of Franchise Development for Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc, I've had plenty of experience myself.

But this spring I was dealt the dirty ‘R" word not once....but again!

Here's the deal.

Two years ago I spent many a spring morning having coffee on my deck watching a male House Wren meticulously build a nest for his wife.

Starting at 4:30 in the morning, he would sing his very loud song and begin the painstaking task of filling up my bird house with branches, lint, rattan, or whatever else he could get his beak on.

He would work all day long, maneuvering twigs that were bigger than his entire body into the small mouth of the bird house. By mid-May, his house was finished. It was filled with twigs from top to bottom. It was a very impressive result.

And I was so proud that our home was chosen as his nesting-place.

Several days later, I heard his familiar song and then another similar song right behind it.

Sure enough, his wife had come to make the nest her home.

Or so I thought!

After peeking her head in, and then out again, she split!

I never saw her or her husband again.

Nor did my bird house ever get used!

Amazed and disappointed, I googled ‘House Wren' to learn about their nesting habits.

Sure enough, here's how it works: The male makes about ten, yes ten...of these back-breaking nests.

After working all spring on all ten nests, the wife comes out of hiding to make her choice.

She's the one that chooses one of these ten nests.

She did not choose mine!

I whined all summer.

This March, two years later, I heard the familiar song again.

This time the male sought out my new bird house...the one I bought over the winter to make me think of springtime.

I was so excited I couldn't stand it.

I got up at 5am to watch him once again begin his relentless work...singing and working...singing and working.

Again the house was filled to the brim when his wifey came to visit.

Again she rejected our house!

I can hear my real estate friends chuckling now....just like in real life, yes?

But the truth is I was crushed! Again!

So what's this story really about?

It's about rejection...the kind of rejection you deal with every day.

If you have done everything possible to build a strong relationship with your prospect and have offered the best value for their money, your prospect is likely to buy from you.

If you have helped them navigate the landmines, offered them solutions to their concerns, and helped them come to an honest decision, they are likely to buy from you. If you have done everything possible to create an open and honest partnership, they are likely to buy from you.

If they don't, it was just not meant to be.

Most probably it was just not the right fit.

That's it and that's all!
