California Fresh Food Franchise to expand into Middle East

“We weren’t sure if it was real or what,” Jordan said, referring to when he was first contacted about opening a shop in the Middle East. He said his company’s marketing firm, 101 Marketing, also based in Santa Maria, had been looking into selling franchises across the United States, but the foreign deal was somewhat of a surprise.

California Fresh opened its first franchise last year in Templeton, USA, Jordan said. The company soon will open stores in Doha, oil-rich Qatar’s capital city, Jordan said. The new California Fresh will be in the heart of the business center of Doha in one of the new high-rise office buildings, he said.

As of 2007, oil and natural gas revenues enabled Qatar to attain the second-highest per capita income in the world with a gross domestic product of more than $101 billion. The mostly Muslim nation has a population of 833,285 and total area of 11,586 square kilometers. Qatar is a peninsula, bordered by Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf.

“The deal is the first of a 10-store project by Wall Street Café for placing California Fresh in the Gulf Coast Community, of GCC, of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE (United Arab Emirates), Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait,” Jordan said. Wall Street Café is the London-based umbrella organization that is bringing California Fresh to the Middle East, he said.

“They were looking for either a New York or California-style deli concept,” Jordan said. He said Wall Street Café also plans to bring pizza shop and taco stand chains to the Middle East. California Fresh serves delicatessen-style sandwiches, salads and soups, along with juice bar-style fruit smoothies. “We will have to adjust our menu to add local flavors to the smoothies,” Mr. Jordan said.

Jordan said his success secret lies in his company’s ability to provide the freshest meat and produce to make the items on his menu. His company has been recognized as a top business by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Inspired to run his own business, Jordan said his education and the confidence it gave him have helped his success. His training at Westmont added to his ability to adapt to the changing market in the wake of the recession that struck just a few years after he started his enterprise, Jordan said. “We had a great deal of entrepreneurial training at Westmont,” he said.

After he kept his enterprise going as the recession eased, rather than shrink Mr. Jordan said he saw a new opportunity. “We knew people would be looking for jobs,” he said. “So, we decided to open a franchise.”

Now, California Fresh has gone international.

“We believe that the California Fresh concept will resonate well with the residents of the GCC,” said Damian Riviez, general manager of the Middle East expansion of Wall Street Café. “Our communities identify with the Southern California lifestyle and will welcome the offerings of creative fresh fruit smoothies, fresh salads and deli sandwiches all -- under one roof.”

Re: Google Adsense - no visitors in 4 hours! Re: Google Adsense - no visitors in 4 hours! -
and today no one's visited any of my sites at all in 4 hours??? I find that very difficult to believe. [/quote:22xccdap] To update, had 80 visitors between 5 and 6 pm...that's more like it... Nevertheless, that's 4 hours that have just disappeared and I don't really believe that no one looked at at least one page of my site in all that time.... Of course the internet in much of the Middle East seems to be down (and you can't tell me that wasn't sabotage... [i:22xccdap]three [/i:22xccdap]cables cut?) but I never got many visits from that area anyway. And there's snowstorms in the midwest.... but that means people should be stuck in their homes and surfing the web because they have nothing better to do... so still my hits should have been up, not absent! Ah, it's a mystery...

Re: Info for would be franchisers... Re: Info for would be franchisers... -
Like Franchise Times, Franchise Update is a very practical magazine. There is no blah blah, just straight facts that anyone in the franchise community can relate to. I just want to mention that all these magazines are NOT franchisee oriented. I mean these magazines are for franchise professionals. If you're looking to buy a franchise, you won't find much information in there. To answer your question, getting published in Franchise Times was fairly easy. I don't want to brag too much but I think I am known in the franchise industry. I was the marketing guy at Franchise.com for a few years before joining my new company, the World Franchising Network. So people know me and I have a very good relationship with Nancy Weingartner, the Managing Editor at Franchise Times. I was talking with her at the last Franchise Expo South in Miami and she mentioned she'd like me to be profiled. I was like "ok, sure!". I like this franchise executive profile thing in Franchise Times as it is rarely BS. People are usually really natural in there.[/quote:1d29sdv1] Thanks for the follow up Sebastien! And I can't say that I'm surprised that networking with the right people and managing your relationships with them properly are the keys to being published. I guess the old adage holds true of "it's not who you know, but who knows you" that's important.
Re: Are Economic Recessions Good for Franchising? Re: Are Economic Recessions Good for Franchising? - All we can do is remain wide awake and pay attention to the ebb and flow. My strategy is to be prepared and go with the flow. There could be some rough times ahead... Interestingly, our business has remained strong. I believe it's because we're in such a tight little niche and we're well positioned to sign jobs nationwide, therefore we're not restricted to location. We also target affluent markets that have higher disposable incomes - this we do locally. Here are some Franchise Categories that could weather a good recession...
