Cox & Kings eyes overseas acquisitions to strengthen franchise operations in India

Guest post by: Dhawal Shah

Article Overview: 2nd February 2010: Travel operator Cox & Kings India is scouting for acquisitions in countries like the US, Canada, England, Australia and New Zealand, a senior company official said today. The travel operator, which raised Rs 610 crore through a public issue in December last year, has earmarked Rs 150 crore for funding such acquisitions. "We have a fund of Rs 150 crore earmarked for this (acquisitions). We are very comfortable with countries where the laws are familiar like the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand...It becomes very attractive for us particularly since these countries are just coming out of recession," Cox & Kings Executive Director Peter Kerkar told PTI here.

Cox & Kings eyes overseas acquisitions to strengthen franchise operations in India

Kerkar said the company is still on the look out and that "it could be several small companies or one large company". Last year, Cox & Kings acquired MyPlanet Australia and Bentours International, expanding its product and retail distribution presence in Australia. Besides this, it has a strong presence there through Tempo Holidays, a outbound tourism market player that it had earlier acquired. He said the company would focus on enhancing its distribution in India, through franchise sales outlets as well as internet.

Cox & Kings as a franchisor would grant the franchisee / entrepreneur the licensed right to own and operate a business based on the Cox and King's travel business concept, using its trademark. Cox and Kings would help the franchisee start the business, providing training, assistance with, site development and ordering inventory, advertising and marketing support. To benefit from this business opportunity, a franchisee needs 250 to 1,000 sq ft of space and to make an investment of Rs 10-15 lakh

"Going forward, we want to increase our distribution in India, particularly on franchise circuit. We plan to take the total number of franchise outlets to 150 by December-end and will focus on Tier II and Tier III cities," Kerkar said. Cox & Kings currently has 80 franchise sales outlets in 44 locations across India. The company is betting big on the inbound tourist traffic from the US, UK, Russia and Japan because it feels that a recovery in the foreign markets would further enhance its earnings prospects.

Besides, it expects to attract more business from international tourists through the Maharaja Express, India’s first pan-India super luxury train that was flagged off last month from Mumbai to Kolkata. Launched by the Royale Indian Rail Tours (RITL), Maharaja Express is a joint venture between IRCTC and Cox and Kings India. "Certainly, the new initiative on the luxury train will be a hit with international tourists. We are expecting a very strong response (and already) 150 tour operators worldwide have signed up with the product," he said. Kerkar said he expects about 10-15 per cent growth in India's inbound tourist travel next fiscal after arrivals hit a low in the previous year led by the financial meltdown, the 26/11 terrorist attacks and swine flu.

Re: Large 24" LCD & Eye Health, Good or Bad? Re: Large 24" LCD & Eye Health, Good or Bad? - I had asked my eye doctor a while back if staring at a computer screen will have any damaging affects on my eyes. As far as eye pressure and the like, it won't have any affect. There's no direct harm in it. However, if you're straining your eyes, which leads to eye fatigue, then that can be bad. I suggest adjusting the screen resolution to make things easier to see so that you don't have to strain your eyes. I notice my eyes get dry after a while also. I don't think that's hurting them any, but rather more so of an annoyance.
Re: Franchising? Why pay franchise fees? Re: Franchising? Why pay franchise fees? - Most successful business owners, who develop a franchise program, state that it took them several yers, and perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars, to figure things out and get to where they are today. Franchising offers the person wanting to own a business the chance to open at the point where the franchisor is today. They may have to pay a franchise fee, but it will likely be much less than the cost of their own learning curve. Additionally, franchising may offer a better chance for ongoing success. That being said, truly entrepreneurial types normally don't buy a franchise; they have the capability to fiture most things out for themselves. Sourcing, however, as mentioned above, is a strong benefit of franchising. T Those buying franchises are frequently individuals without a great deal of business experience (although there are exceptions, and multi-unit owners are certainly an exception). Franchise operations manuals are written to the level of a new business owner for whom this may be their first such experience.
