Franchise India’s Small Business Congress 2010 Review
We recently attended Franchise India’s Small Business Congress 2010. The event was well attended by over 100 Entrepreneurs. The event was organised by Franchise India Holding Ltd. in participation and support of Zee Business, in association with Microsoft and IndiaMart.com, we were associated with the Small Business Congress as a Supporting Organisation. The event was held at Novotel, previously a Holiday Inn Franchise at Juhu, Mumbai.
The Opening Address was made by Sachin Marya, the CEO of Franchise India Group. The Welcome Note was delivered by Rod Young, the Executive Director of DC Strategy. DC Strategy is a renowned Australian company involved in consulting, research and legal work for building networks and brands of many franchise brands.
Rod spoke about the potential of franchising and retailing in India, especially considering that there are over 14 Million Retailers in India and over 25 Million Small and Medium Enterprises in India.
Rod was later followed by Mr. Dinesh Rai, the Secretary of Ministry of Micro and Small Enterprises, he mentioned that after the phenomenal success of the Govt. sponsored schemes to assist and grow SMEs in India, several neighbouring countries have been proposing research for the SMEs in India. He emphasized that SMEs are the backbone of Germany and China. SMEs in India, contribute 40% of India’s exports. Microlending is only 45% of all commercial disbursements of banks, amounting to Rs. 275,000 Crore and is likely to increase to 60%.
At the inaugural Session, Dinesh Aggarwal, the Founder and CEO of IndiaMart.com said that the mindset needs to change and we need to consider that Small Businesses are more so, rightfully Emerging Businesses. This session was moderated by Venus Barak, the VP of FranCorp India.
Rod further added that India is an exciting market and has strong global perception. It is also the World’s Most Attractive Market. Dr. HP Kumar further added that the Government Schemes have also helped SMEs compete in the larger market, for example, the Consortia Tendering Program, helps smaller companies get larger contracts, helps them finance the business as well as provide scale to it.
The next session covered integral aspects for structuring a business plan, a must for entrepreneurs and start-ups. Vivek Joshi, Kotak Private Equity, Rajiv Uppal, Ernst and Young and Rajan Chhibba of Intrim Business Associates shares their insights.
The next session was about Angel Funding and Traditional Finance, the session was led and moderated by Anjana Vivek, Venture Bean Consulting. The Co-panelists at the session were TR Bajalia, IDBI Bank, Anand Lunia, Seed Fund India and Padmaaja Ruparel, Indian Angel Network.
The Post Lunch Session was activated and enlivened by the wit and humour of Jagdeep Kapoor, the renowned marketing consultant. He shared his various witty quotes, some of them, Dont come on the rasta by selling sasta, Dont sell the right product to the wrong audience, so on and so forth.
Another interesting session was the Women-On-Top Session, where the renowned fashion designer, Neeta Lulla, Megha Poddar, Siyarams and Ms. Anjana Vivek, Venture Bean Consulting.
Neeta Lulla attributed her success to Commitment, Dedication and Perseverence. Megha Poddar mentioned her challenges of Getting Taken Seriously, as well as dealing with Internal
The last session for the day was Idea’s Masterclass, the session was effectively moderated by Manak Singh, the Executive Director of TIE Mumbai Chapter. Arun Khetan, New Age Knowledge Systems, Suresh Bharwani, Jetking, Pradeep Hirani, Kimaya, Dinesh Agarwal, IndiaMart.in shared their thoughts on what does it take to come up with ideas, validate them and execute them flawlessly.
The event ended with Small Business Awards, later during the evening. This event had a high concentration of Franchise speakers, considering that the event was organised by Franchise India. The event focussed primarily on franchising, starting-up and then entrepreneurship, considering the profile and theme of the event, the participants were more so looking for ideas and startegies to grow their business from the current level to a much more ambitious one.
Most of these topics were covered on the second day, for example, Making your Business Look Big, Legal Affairs, so on and so forth.
