Guest post by: Dhawal Shah

Article Overview: Bangalore: Jan 29, 2010: Australian coffee company Gloria Jean's Coffees International is on an expansion spree in India. The company, which entered India in 2008 in association with Citymax Hospitality India, an arm of Dubai-based retail major Landmark Group, is targeting 100 outlets across the country by 2013. At present, Gloria Jean's Coffees has only nine outlets in the country.

"We took time to understand the market and figure out which format works best for us. Having reworked and refined our business model, we are now ready to expand our presence across the country," said R Sundararajan, president, Citymax Hospitality.

Gloria Jean's will be opening one outlet each in Pune and the NCR region in the next two-three months and is aiming to open a total of 16 outlets by December 2010. "Going forward we are targeting a total of 100 outlets by 2013," Sundararajan added.

In order to grab a bigger pie of the Rs 1,200-crore coffee café market in India, the coffee chain will invest Rs 50 crore on its store expansion plan. The company feels that concentrated efforts have to be made to gain a strong foothold in India's coffee café market, half of which is unorganised and the remaining mainly dominated by the likes of Barista and Cafe Coffee Day chains.

Further, Gloria Jean's, which has clocked double digit sales growth in India in the last one year, expects to post 30 per cent growth year-on-year going forward. "Our high-street format and our stores in malls have worked very well for us. Also, the store-in-store formats have been a major revenue generator for the company," Sundararajan pointed out. In addition to these, Gloria Jean's is also exploring the mobile coffee shop format to reach out to customers. This new format should be in place by March this year, said Sundararajan.

New McDonalds McCafe concept... New McDonalds McCafe concept... - Has anyone experienced the new coffee concept at McDonalds yet? (Doesn't seem to be in my town in NJ yet). If you have; what do you think about it? (see info below) Americans soon will be able to order a latte with their side of fries at McDonald's restaurants, as the fast food chain initiates coffee bar buildouts at most of its sites around the country. A spokeswoman for the chain's Southwest region said select restaurants in the region will get McCafé coffee shops prior to the national rollout, which is expected in the first half of 2009. McDonald's restaurants in the Louisville, Ky. area were among the first to test market the McCafé Specialty Coffee line. Several Louisville-area McDonald's owner-operators are now planning renovations to add coffee bars, which will serve cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and baked foods. McDonald's expanded its coffee and beverage options with the launch of its premium roast coffee in 2006. About 80 percent of McDonald's 13,700 U.S. restaurants are independently owned and operated by local franchisees.
What are the signs it is time to expand? What are the signs it is time to expand? - I work with small businesses that are considering expansion. Sometimes they are not sure if expansion is the right thing for their business. What types of things should they be looking at to determine if the time is right to expand?
The Starbuck's experience The Starbuck's experience - [quote="Sebastien":3j66y8cv]Being French, I don't really understand what you call the Starbucks experience. We didn't have coffee shops in France until a couple years ago when (surprise!) Starbucks came in. So what's the Starbucks experience? Waiting in line 10 minutes for a cup of coffee? haha I think I understand what you're saying though. I think Starbucks has had tough competition lately with a bunch of coffee shop brands popping up and this is a natural move away from their core business (an actual coffee shop). We're seeing that Starbucks are actually not as profitable as everybody thought. As a side note, I've always said that some day there will be a huge financial scandal about Starbucks. A company just can't grow that fast in a healthy way. Anyways. So Starbucks is calling back founder and old CEO (I'm too lazy to look up his name on Google) to put Starbucks back on track and these vending machines might be some of his first projects. I think it is great to take advantage of such a good brand and do extend it further than a coffee shop.[/quote:3j66y8cv] Hi Sebastien, According to branding expert Martin Lindstrom, "Starbucks' objective is to create an intimate and even romantic atmosphere...The lighting is subdued to keep it cozy. The chairs and floor may be a little scuffed, but that makes it feel comfy and homely, and less intimidating...The music is soothing and sophisticated" (BRANDsense 158). So the Starbucks experience is essentially founder Howard Schultz's recreation of the coffee bar culture in Milan and the reason why they feel they can charge people outrageous prices for coffee. In fact, Starbucks isn't selling coffe, they're selling a unique and memorable brand experience to their customers.
Re: Large 24" LCD & Eye Health, Good or Bad? Re: Large 24" LCD & Eye Health, Good or Bad? - I had asked my eye doctor a while back if staring at a computer screen will have any damaging affects on my eyes. As far as eye pressure and the like, it won't have any affect. There's no direct harm in it. However, if you're straining your eyes, which leads to eye fatigue, then that can be bad. I suggest adjusting the screen resolution to make things easier to see so that you don't have to strain your eyes. I notice my eyes get dry after a while also. I don't think that's hurting them any, but rather more so of an annoyance.
Great Meeting locations Great Meeting locations - I strive to meet professionals at their place of business. I've given the Hotel Lobby a try and it's not bad - they do have good coffee and free Internet! I'm going to continue the practice. I've also hand picked a few Starbucks and Tim Horton Coffee shops in the Downtown area that have great decor and are quiet to hold one on one meetings. If I have to meet with more than two people it's usually in their Office as it's more convenient for them.
