India Fashion Forum 2010 Review and Franchising

There were about 30 Clothing and Apparel Franchise Brands present at the event. Some of the brands at the event were: Ballyfabs, Barista Belmonte, Blackberry, Chhabra Triple Five Fashions, Gini & Jony, Gitanjali, Lifestyle Isabelle, Lerros, Liberty Shoes, Manyavar, FI India, Hunt Accessories, Lilliput, Bespoke Clothing, PUMA, Raymonds, Spykar, Titan, Tommy Hilfiger, Triumph and a few other franchise, business and retail opportunities. There were several startup franchisors present at the event. I would not take those franchise opportunities very seriously.
Mr. Gautam Singhania, the MD of Raymonds Ltd. was the Chairperson and the Keynote for this event, he started off a little delayed, however his speech was well worth it. He started off by comparing India and China. He said that while India has several apparel brands that have made an impact internationally, very few have been able to do so from China. Even domestically, China does not have any noteworthy brands. While, China is very export driven, India has a very strong robust domestic market. India vs. China in the clothing and apparel business is more like Value vs. Volume. India ranks high in value and has seen its exports increase gradually. The strong Indian domestic market has today led to Raymonds Ltd. being the world's largest producer or worsted wool.
The Raymonds Store, continues to grow very rapidly within India as well. One of the recent store openings was at a district in Barwan UP, (considering franchise expansion only in Class 4 and 5 towns). It was a 2500 sq ft store and one of the first day it clocked a sale of a whopping Rs. 21 Lakhs, on the second day it was another Rs. 7.5 Lakhs. This just explains the power of franchising. Raymonds is today one of the oldest franchise brands in this country.
The India Fashion Forum continues to be one of the biggest forums for the fashion industry, it is not just the industry stalwarts that attend this event, but it also the franchisees of all of these companies. It is a great one for networking as well. The event was concluded along with Images Fashion Awards, on a nice star studded evening.

Re: Fashion Re: Fashion - Nana, At you choice you may choose to research the fashion industry a bit more. There is obviously a Business side to it as well as a creative side to it. Find out all the types of roles that exist in the industry. Some that come to mind merchandiser, Window dresser, floor plan organizer (someone needs to determine the layout of a retail store to best sell the goods), fashion consultant (Yorkdale mall has fashion consultants that take you around and tell you what looks great on you - you also get a cut from the sales). This is what I've observed from the business side, you may know more. All these roles I've written about will help you grow as a business person and make the contacts in the industry...possible stepping stones. But further more you'll also notice that you need to develop some business acumen possibly tailored to the fashion industry. When I was at Ryerson I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur someday too. I knew I needed some basic business courses to get a foundation to build from. I was in a Tech/Business Major (I'm sure Fashion has something similar - Fashion/Business Major) and then started to create my own minor. Here are some of the courses I took: Marketing, Law, Entrepreneurial, Management, consulting.. and a few more . Also, I'm sure that within the Fashion Major there are also courses you have to take where you can use your creative side and create designs. Typically within a Major there are focuses you can choose - ask the program coordinator. Your next step is to do some research. 1. Visit Commercial retail outlets like H&M, Banana Republic, or jacob. Tell the Manager your doing some research for University and would like to know what types of Corporate roles exist aside from the roles on the retail floor (like sales associates). If she asks you to elaborate then you can use some of the roles I mentioned above. 2. With this information in hand you can visit the Ryerson Fashion department and inquire with the Program Coordinator on what focus within the Fashion Degree would help you the most. In my program there were 5 different focuses within the Tech/Business program. Just a quick aside. A good friend of mine too has a dream of fashion. he want to create a niche fashion line tailored to skinny men (I can't mention the style). He's in Business school but not in the Fashion program... He's in International Business but all his Minor courses are tailored to running a successful business ... similar to the ones I mentioned above for myself. I have no doubt in my mind he'll make it 'cos his vision is that strong.
Re: Hello! Re: Hello! - Thank you everyone and I am glad to hear from you Evan. I am conducting some research for Internet marketers which I intend to share soon. However, I am a little ways away from being able to distribute it. I intend at some point to get advice on the pricing model and might need to hire someone who provides consultation services on constructing business models. If anyone on this site provides these services I would be interested in hearing from them when I am at that stage. I will post in the Looking for and Review My sections at some point. I figured I can find better service providers here than the Warrior Forum or many other sites. At them moment, I just look forward to networking with everyone. Thanks!
