India's Tata Coffee shares jump on Starbucks deal

Shares in Tata Coffee, a coffee grower and supplier of high-quality Arabica beans, leapt as much as 17.5 percent to a day's high of 544.5 rupees, before easing back on profit-taking to 489.7, still up 5.74 percent.

Seattle-based Starbucks has for years been eyeing the Indian market, where large US food and drink giants such as McDonald's, Domino's and Pizza Hut have already established a strong presence.

Starbucks, which is aiming to open a store by the middle of the year, will come late to the Indian market where competitors including Costa Coffee, Barista, Cafe Coffee Day or Coffee Bean are established.

Typically tea-drinking Indians are increasingly turning to coffee and upmarket cafes, which are promoted as sophisticated marks of affluence and good taste in the class-conscious nation.

"The deal will enhance sales and brand image for Tata Coffee," Kauspubh Pawaskar, an analyst with Mumbai-based brokerage Sharekhan told AFP on Friday.

Starbucks' entry to India will not threaten existing branded coffee chains in the country, Kauspubh said, expecting Indians to consume more of the beverage.

"Disposable income for India's middle-class is rising, as economic growth improves," the analyst said.

India is forecast to produce 299,000 tonnes coffee in the fiscal year ending March. Nearly 70 percent of this is exported, with 95,000 tonnes consumed locally.

India's coffee consumption grows by 5.0-6.0 percent each year, Pawaskar said.

Re: Will you buy the cheapest car in the world or...? - Hi ideasuniversity, I probably wouldn't buy the cheapest car in the world because I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for". A person would probably be better off buying a used Honda Civic than a new Nano Tata for $2500. I just wouldn't feel safe in a Nano Tata since the price would give it a lower perception of quality and value.

Great Meeting locations Great Meeting locations - I strive to meet professionals at their place of business. I've given the Hotel Lobby a try and it's not bad - they do have good coffee and free Internet! I'm going to continue the practice. I've also hand picked a few Starbucks and Tim Horton Coffee shops in the Downtown area that have great decor and are quiet to hold one on one meetings. If I have to meet with more than two people it's usually in their Office as it's more convenient for them.
Avatars help conversion Avatars help conversion - According to February's INC Magazine, avatars are great conversion tools. They show a case study of a gift company called Say Thank You With Coffee that used an avatar and saw their sales jump 20%. The monthly cost through services like SitePal are $10-$50 / month. Oh and female avatars produce twice as many sales as male avatars!
Starbucks: Licensing vs Joint-Venture Starbucks: Licensing vs Joint-Venture - Hello there i have a few questions, i would like to hear from you some ideas and opinions for my case study... 1) Why do you think Starbucks has recently elected to expand internationally primarily through local joint-ventures, to whom it licenses its format, as opposed to a pure licensing strategy? 2) And I was also wondering, what are the advantages of a joint-venture entry mode for Starbucks over entering though wholly owned subsidiaries? On occasion, Starbucks has chosen a wholly owned subsidiary to control its foreign expansion, e.g. uk or thailand? why? 3)And which theory of FDI best explains the international expansion strategy adopted by Starbucks? Thanks for helping me... Best Guy
