Leading Italian coffee brand Caffe Pascucci has entered India by setting up its first outlet here to retail imported blended coffee. The euro 600-million (Rs.4,060-crore) Pascucci has roped in the city-based Madhura Beverages India as its master franchisee for setting up a chain of outlets across the country.

"Our franchisee will invest Rs.600 million (Rs.60 crore) over the next three years to set up about 60 outlets across India, including 10 in Bangalore, five each in Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune and New Delhi over the next 18 months," Caffe Pascucci managing director Mario Pascucci told reporters at the soft launch of the maiden outlet on the posh MG Road.

In spite of a whopping 120 percent import tariff levied on blended coffee, Pascucci will ship the ingredient from its roasting plant at Montecerignone in Italy in a blended form as the coffee beans are sourced from Latin American countries such as Columbia, Haiti and Brazil. "Our products range from plain espresso to rich Italian specialties, which can be sipped with cream mousse, coconut or chocolate as extra ingredients. We will also sell flavoured tea, iced tea and coffee-based recipes," Pascucci said. The five-decade-old family-run Italian firm also plans to set up a roasting and blending facility in India to reduce the production cost and minimise logistic overheads.

"Once we establish our global brand presence and build volumes, we will be able to set up a roaster and blending plant here. We will also explore using Indian coffee variety such as Arabica and Robusta, which have a distinct flavour," Pascucci said. About 70 percent of coffee produced in the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are exported as domestic consumption remains sluggish due to intense competition from other soft beverages like colas and changing lifestyle.

The Rs.300-crore Madhura group is scouting for prime locations in metros and prime cities to roll out the Caffe Pascucci outlets. The retail coffee outlet market in India is estimated at about Rs.650-700 crore and growing at 25-30 percent annually. Cafe Coffee Day and Barista are among the prominent retail chains in the country, there are several other international players as well, that include Gloria Jeans Coffee, Costa Coffee, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and the recent, Aromas Coffee Franchise from Australia

Pascucci has around 100 outlets in about 20 countries, including South Korea, China, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Dubai. "Our focus is to bring select premium food and beverages brands to India from Europe and Caffe Pascucci is our first venture. We will also be offering a range of teas, pastries, cakes and Italian food," Madhura Beverages managing director V.S. Sudhakar said. The franchisee hopes to break-even in the fourth year of operation.

New McDonalds McCafe concept... New McDonalds McCafe concept... - Has anyone experienced the new coffee concept at McDonalds yet? (Doesn't seem to be in my town in NJ yet). If you have; what do you think about it? (see info below) Americans soon will be able to order a latte with their side of fries at McDonald's restaurants, as the fast food chain initiates coffee bar buildouts at most of its sites around the country. A spokeswoman for the chain's Southwest region said select restaurants in the region will get McCafé coffee shops prior to the national rollout, which is expected in the first half of 2009. McDonald's restaurants in the Louisville, Ky. area were among the first to test market the McCafé Specialty Coffee line. Several Louisville-area McDonald's owner-operators are now planning renovations to add coffee bars, which will serve cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and baked foods. McDonald's expanded its coffee and beverage options with the launch of its premium roast coffee in 2006. About 80 percent of McDonald's 13,700 U.S. restaurants are independently owned and operated by local franchisees.
Starbucks vs Dunkin' Donuts Starbucks vs Dunkin' Donuts - OT, but amusing... I saw a funny commercial for Dunkin Donuts the other day. Woman goes into a fancy coffee place and wants to order a large coffee, but she can't. The coffee comes in three sizes, but they are... and then the sales girl rattles off three Italian-sounding names... And then a Dunkin Donuts spokesman comes on and says, "Small, medium and large. We keep it simple." I assume this is a dig at the pretentiousness of Starbucks, where they name their sizes in a pretentious way. (I have to admit I've only been to a Starbucks once, to get some cookies - as I don't even drink coffee - but the prices were outrageous!)
Re: How does an entrepreneur stay energized? Re: How does an entrepreneur stay energized? - ;0) you obviously arent from Canada. A double double is a coffee with 2 creme, 2 sugar at Tim Horton's (our largest coffee shop chain in Canada) ;0) if you come, let me know, and I 'll buy you one. Jude
Bringing on a partner Bringing on a partner - Hi ideasceo, I can't speak for the legal system in India but here in Canada you would need to set up a corporation instead of a sole proprietorship. It is more work and costs more money to set up but it allows you to sell shares in your business as well as provides a number of other benefits. If you know you want to bring investors on you might want to look into setting up the right company structure now so you don't face headaches in the future.
The Starbuck's experience The Starbuck's experience - [quote="Sebastien":3j66y8cv]Being French, I don't really understand what you call the Starbucks experience. We didn't have coffee shops in France until a couple years ago when (surprise!) Starbucks came in. So what's the Starbucks experience? Waiting in line 10 minutes for a cup of coffee? haha I think I understand what you're saying though. I think Starbucks has had tough competition lately with a bunch of coffee shop brands popping up and this is a natural move away from their core business (an actual coffee shop). We're seeing that Starbucks are actually not as profitable as everybody thought. As a side note, I've always said that some day there will be a huge financial scandal about Starbucks. A company just can't grow that fast in a healthy way. Anyways. So Starbucks is calling back founder and old CEO (I'm too lazy to look up his name on Google) to put Starbucks back on track and these vending machines might be some of his first projects. I think it is great to take advantage of such a good brand and do extend it further than a coffee shop.[/quote:3j66y8cv] Hi Sebastien, According to branding expert Martin Lindstrom, "Starbucks' objective is to create an intimate and even romantic atmosphere...The lighting is subdued to keep it cozy. The chairs and floor may be a little scuffed, but that makes it feel comfy and homely, and less intimidating...The music is soothing and sophisticated" (BRANDsense 158). So the Starbucks experience is essentially founder Howard Schultz's recreation of the coffee bar culture in Milan and the reason why they feel they can charge people outrageous prices for coffee. In fact, Starbucks isn't selling coffe, they're selling a unique and memorable brand experience to their customers.
