Automotive franchises going strong despite industry problems

With Americans holding onto their cars for longer than ever before, their analysis of the Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDD's) of 30 automotive franchises found that more and more drivers are turning to franchises to keep their car on the road.

The endemic problems in America's car industry have been well-documented. But Franchise Direct's study has found that the sharp decline of automotive industry, coinciding with America's worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, has actually created some exciting opportunities for aftermarket and car rental and sales franchises.

The reality is Americans are not buying new cars as regularly as they once did. According to this new automotive franchise study, the projected new car sales for this year are 9.7 million units. This constitutes a 40% decline since 2007. Yet Americans continue to love their automobiles. The bottom line is that drivers are becoming more dependent on services provided by automotive franchises because they are choosing to get more life out of their car.

Aftermarket automotive franchises are best positioned to succeed, as consumers seek maintenance and repairs with greater urgency. Used car and rental franchises will also enjoy the benefits of this new reluctance to splurge on new automobiles.

There are also new niche markets developing for franchising to exploit. In the last few years, drivers have embraced automobiles with complicated engine control, microprocessors and high-tech safety and entertainment equipment. There has also been a movement towards 'green' technology in car manufacturing. As these technologies become more and more popular, a new market is growing for aftermarket franchises. Drivers no longer have the know-how to do this complex automotive work on their own and will turn instead to reliable franchise brands.

The great irony is that the global recession and the collapse of Detroit's auto industry has opened the door for the recent success of automotive franchises. America's love affair with the automobile is undiminished, but American's attitude towards car buying has radically changed. This research shows that consumers are turning towards automotive franchises to keep their cars on the road. With the government's stimulus plan providing economic optimism, it is an excellent time to consider franchise opportunities in the automotive sector.

Re: Which franchise would you buy? Re: Which franchise would you buy? - I like franchises that I have a personal interest in. I know this sounds redudant, but you hear about people who think they are going to invest in one franchise (or franchise industry), only to go a completely different direction after researching and gathering info. Personally, I like home service franchises - most of these are either mobile or home based (or both) and usually have relatively low start up costs (and there are many many to choose from across the industry).
Re: Fed rate cuts . . . Re: Fed rate cuts . . . - Prime may be down but the Lender's tightened up, so the rate going down really doesn't help the avarage Joe or the fair credit borrower. Seems that pro-franchise Lenders all over the country all raised their standards. Where I used to be able to get someone franchise financing with a credit score of 650 and minimum collateral (30- 40%) with little management experience or no direct industry experience; the Lender's now want credit of 670+ and 50 - 70% in collateral on a minimal level (depending upon the lender and the franchise) and they are all requiring stronger & related experience (industry experience preferred). New franchises to the franchising industry are very hard to get financing for, unless you are a really strong borrower with strong related experience. If you are opening a restaurant franchise, the lenders want to see you have restaurant and management experience. Lenders also want to see a long track record with a franchise and they want to see 75+ units up and running successfully before they put down their guard. These are truely tough lending times and i don't really think the lower rate helps the avarage person.

Re: Twiiter an sales Re: Twiiter an sales - Thanks Evan, Jackie! Vey helpful tips! Evan, I agree, Twitter is great when it's used as a tool for analysis for specific industry - it's easy to learn about relevant news, trends, challenges. Then you get the idea about what solution can be used to help solve the problems the prospects are facing. I guess though LinkedIn is better for actual leag generation and personal contacts. What do you think? Jackie, how to dvelop strong relationships with your followers? Just by retweting? is it going to have an effect?
Re: Introducing a US franshise to a Canadian market Re: Introducing a US franshise to a Canadian market - [quote="franchisebrief.com":3ipkzvlg]I am actually reading stats on this subject as I write and about 80% of american franchises tat go international go to Canada first.[/quote:3ipkzvlg] Thanks for the key points Russell and franchisebrief.com! If 80% of American franchises expand to Canada first, then I wonder what the average success rate is and how it varies depending on the industry?
