5 Major Advantages Of Multi-Unit Franchising

5 Major Advantages Of Multi-Unit Franchising

Increasingly, the candidates I work with as a franchise consultant are considering franchises that allow for multiple units. One major reason for this is a result of the increasing number of downsized executives in America needing to quickly replace lost six-figure-plus salaries. Franchising allows someone with management background and business acumen to be in business for themselves, while receiving the training and support necessary to be a huge success. Their options in the traditional workplace may be limited. Or maybe they are seeking a career change, and they recognize the fact that by owning multiple franchise units, or even multiple brands, the road to meeting and exceeding their income goals can be realized much sooner.

Some popular categories of multi-unit franchising are hair care, fast food, maid and cleaning services, and home improvement, to name a few.

Of course, the franchisor isn't going to grant the rights to a multi-unit territory to just anyone off the street. In addition to showing that they are adequately capitalized, current or potential franchisees will need to present a strong business argument as to why they deserve this privilege. One of the best ways to demonstrate that is by already being a tremendous success in a single unit franchise.

Below are five terrific benefits of multi-unit franchising:

1. Profitability and overall success becomes accelerated. The expenses per unit decrease as you're able to spread the costs over multiple locations. This frees up your budget for additional marketing or training for a more productive staff.

2. Marketing and advertising is much more cost efficient. Example: you own three hair care franchises within the same small town. Lets say the cost to place an ad in the local newspaper marketing your services is $200. So you're able to advertise all three locations in one ad for the same cost you would pay if you had only a single unit. Do you agree that 3 for 1 marketing is extremely attractive? Take the money you save over time on newspaper advertising and buy a 30-second radio spot. That's true leverage.

3. Less assistance and training needed from the franchisor. No need to attend training multiple times. The franchisee has plenty of hands-on experience by way of a single-unit franchisee, and he already is following the proven system. Time is money.

4. More efficient and flexible staffing. Because multi-units are typically geographically friendly, employee illness and leave of absences can be covered more effectively by shifting employees from one location to another based on necessity. Vacation calendars are more flexible as well with the ability to cross cover.

5. Leveraged buying power. Substantial savings can be realized when you are purchasing supplies for three or more locations as opposed to only one. For example, paper and janitorial supplies can be bought in bulk, and then broken down and divided among the stores. Also, slower selling products can be shifted to a higher volume location for quicker sales if necessary.

Multi-unit franchising certainly may not be for everyone. However, for a seasoned business person with great management and people skills (and sufficient net worth and liquid assets), this can be the perfect investment vehicle that can provide a very rewarding career and rapid success-while building their own business empire.

Re: Fashion Re: Fashion - Nana, At you choice you may choose to research the fashion industry a bit more. There is obviously a Business side to it as well as a creative side to it. Find out all the types of roles that exist in the industry. Some that come to mind merchandiser, Window dresser, floor plan organizer (someone needs to determine the layout of a retail store to best sell the goods), fashion consultant (Yorkdale mall has fashion consultants that take you around and tell you what looks great on you - you also get a cut from the sales). This is what I've observed from the business side, you may know more. All these roles I've written about will help you grow as a business person and make the contacts in the industry...possible stepping stones. But further more you'll also notice that you need to develop some business acumen possibly tailored to the fashion industry. When I was at Ryerson I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur someday too. I knew I needed some basic business courses to get a foundation to build from. I was in a Tech/Business Major (I'm sure Fashion has something similar - Fashion/Business Major) and then started to create my own minor. Here are some of the courses I took: Marketing, Law, Entrepreneurial, Management, consulting.. and a few more . Also, I'm sure that within the Fashion Major there are also courses you have to take where you can use your creative side and create designs. Typically within a Major there are focuses you can choose - ask the program coordinator. Your next step is to do some research. 1. Visit Commercial retail outlets like H&M, Banana Republic, or jacob. Tell the Manager your doing some research for University and would like to know what types of Corporate roles exist aside from the roles on the retail floor (like sales associates). If she asks you to elaborate then you can use some of the roles I mentioned above. 2. With this information in hand you can visit the Ryerson Fashion department and inquire with the Program Coordinator on what focus within the Fashion Degree would help you the most. In my program there were 5 different focuses within the Tech/Business program. Just a quick aside. A good friend of mine too has a dream of fashion. he want to create a niche fashion line tailored to skinny men (I can't mention the style). He's in Business school but not in the Fashion program... He's in International Business but all his Minor courses are tailored to running a successful business ... similar to the ones I mentioned above for myself. I have no doubt in my mind he'll make it 'cos his vision is that strong.
laptop vs. Desktop laptop vs. Desktop - I'm not a heavy gamer or graphics person so a Laptop is ideal for me for all the obvious reasons (portability, wireless, work on the go, etc etc) Major downside is the battery power and the cost to replace it - half as much as the cost of the laptop on my current IBM.
Re: Re Franchise etc Re: Re Franchise etc - [quote="bmueller47":e0j0nu4t]Can you see a shift of various types of franchises? What I am thinking about is that today it is more difficult to create franchises, that has great appeal. More and more people want to have their business, but no interference of someone else.[/quote:e0j0nu4t] Not sure what you mean exactly but it is certain that more and more people want to have their own business but not more and more people know what they really want to do, or how to do it. And that's what franchising is all about. Franchising is not for an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur will do his own thing. People who buy franchises want a turn key business, with a proven model. Franchising in the US had never been that good. I don't have the exact numbers in mind but I know for sure that franchising is growing more and more as people are getting more and more aware of this business model.
