5 Tips to Select the Right Franchise Opportunity

Written by: Michael Hemenway

Article Overview: Selecting the right franchise is the first step towards franchise success. For that, you must check out the viability of the product/service you will be selling along with many other things. Consulting the present franchisees and looking into the litigation history of the franchisor are two of them. If you don’t want to do it all by yourself, consult competent franchise consultants.

5 Tips to Select the Right Franchise Opportunity

Selecting the right franchise opportunity is the most important part of starting a franchise. So, to help you in choosing the right franchise, here are five effective tips:

1. Look at the product/service the concept is selling. Is it something that people will always need or something that may become obsolete in coming years? Remember, a franchise agreement generally is for ten years. So, you must consider the long-term demand of the product over immediate profit. For example, computers are an integral part of our society today and will become more important in future. Hence, franchises like 1-800-905-Geek, that offers computer maintenance, will find clients even ten years from now. But video rental stores are already experiencing slow business and may become slower as technology evolves and entertainment becomes more net-based in the future.

2. Consult the present franchisees for an insider’s view of the franchise system. Most top franchises will allow you to interview their franchisees before you buy a franchise from them. If your franchisor is advising not to talk to others except its chosen franchisees, then it is better you think twice about the concept. When you talk to the franchisees, observe their attitude towards the system. Do they sound grumpy or happy? Are they looking for ways to get out of the system or opening another location? Such observations will be very important in deciding how good the system is.

3. Read meticulously the UFOC of the franchise you are considering. Specifically read the litigation section. It will be better if you hire a franchise attorney in this endeavor. According to the new FTC ruling, franchisors will also have to list the litigations started by them against their franchisees. Noticing the nature of the cases closely will help you to understand the franchisor-franchisee relationship of the concept.

4. Just as you are investigating the franchise concept before settling on its franchise business for sale offer, the franchise company too will investigate you. If it’s too eager to close the deal, then chances are that the franchise is more interested in selling a franchise than developing a franchise system! Many such franchise concepts fail later on, because they expanded too fast too soon. Due diligence is very necessary before starting a franchise; it will help you to avoid fraudulent companies.

5. If you find the entire process troublesome, you can contact efficient franchise consultants to ease your work. A competent and professional franchise consultant will pair you with such a franchisor that is perfect for you in every way. But that doesn’t mean you stop investigating; you must analyze the consultant first! He or she should be working for your benefit and not for the benefit of the companies that provide him or her commissions for referring candidates! Trust reputed sites to provide you with genuine franchise consultants with in-depth knowledge of the industry.

Re: Info for would be franchisers... Re: Info for would be franchisers... -
Like Franchise Times, Franchise Update is a very practical magazine. There is no blah blah, just straight facts that anyone in the franchise community can relate to. I just want to mention that all these magazines are NOT franchisee oriented. I mean these magazines are for franchise professionals. If you're looking to buy a franchise, you won't find much information in there. To answer your question, getting published in Franchise Times was fairly easy. I don't want to brag too much but I think I am known in the franchise industry. I was the marketing guy at Franchise.com for a few years before joining my new company, the World Franchising Network. So people know me and I have a very good relationship with Nancy Weingartner, the Managing Editor at Franchise Times. I was talking with her at the last Franchise Expo South in Miami and she mentioned she'd like me to be profiled. I was like "ok, sure!". I like this franchise executive profile thing in Franchise Times as it is rarely BS. People are usually really natural in there.[/quote:1d29sdv1] Thanks for the follow up Sebastien! And I can't say that I'm surprised that networking with the right people and managing your relationships with them properly are the keys to being published. I guess the old adage holds true of "it's not who you know, but who knows you" that's important.
how much for a franchise fee? how much for a franchise fee? - Dear Colleague There is no easy answer to this question. Things to consider:
The sizeof the Franchise Clent base Expected Turnover Intellectual Property costs (recoup) Number of Franchises Number of employees Original Set up costs Franchise admin costs An example: A franchise that I was involved in setting was to a simple "lawn mowing/home repair" franchise. The Franchise included national/local advertising - preparation of client lists - general admin - central accounting etc The Franchise involved 300-500 clients - and an annual turnover of about $300,000 .
