Written by: Michael Hemenway

Article Overview: The senior-care industry is a thriving sector and is expected to undergo a major boom as the “baby boomers” start to retire. They are in sound health and have good money in their hands. But they too need effective assistance at times and that is exactly what is fueling the growth of this segment of the franchising industry.

Statistics Show Senior Care Category Will Only Increase

Just after the Second World War, a great number of births were recorded in the history of the United States. Aptly named as “baby boomers”, the members of this generation have transformed the American society in more than one way. They were the people responsible for breaking free from the conservative attitude of the previous generation. These “Flower Children” of the ‘60s challenged the society, broke down class and race barrier and created a new America simply through their hard work and new outlook. Already retired or on the verge of retiring, the number of senior citizens is supposed to grow even more by the end of 2010 and thus, the way society deals with senior citizens is bound to change!

This was the generation where both the partners started working. So, now when they are retiring, they have more disposable income in their hands than their parents. This means these people can live in more luxury and amenities. Typically, they own a house, which they are reluctant to give up. Health conscious from the beginning, they are in good shape despite their age. Moreover, owing to modern advancements in the fields of science and medicines, they can fight the problems of old age in a better way. But, approximately 84% of our senior citizens are living alone and nearly half of them need help to execute heavy outdoor and indoor works. As they grow older, they also might require proper assistance for getting the groceries as well as taking medicines.

That is exactly why everyone is so sure about the growth-rate of the senior-care category in the franchising business. Most senior-care concepts such as Adult Day Services, Home Care Assistance and Synergy Home Care have earned fame by offering different types of services. From cleaning the house and helping in food preparation to getting the grocery and assisting in picking up the appropriate dresses – the staffs of concepts are offering great support to the oldies. Furthermore, the services vary according to the requirements of the clients. Hence, a care-giver can start with light works and go on to offer more non-medical helps in the future. What’s more, the influence of 36 million senior citizens of USA is not only limited to the field of senior-care; there are other businesses as well that are relying heavily on them. Owing to these senior citizens, the fast-casual diners have also emerged in a big way! Beauty and allied industries also have quite a many senior clients, as looking good is as important to baby boomers as is staying healthy!

Re: How important is your name? Re: How important is your name? - Hey: A couple of thoughts, here. If your name became the business name and you named your kid the same thing, if the kid resented the career path, he or she could just change the nature of the business! Sell the farm, turn their back on Dad's legacy, and start a communications business with the proceeds (or vice-versa). Get the old guy rolling in his grave before his time. Ha! My Dad is not famous or successful. But he does have my name, almost. I am GT; he is GA. And to be truthful, that's exactly why you folks call me GT! I wanted my own identity, so many years ago I started using my middle initial along with my first name. Even so, a few years ago we STILL had a problem with our numbers in the telephone book. So I added "Senior" to his name in the book and "Junior" to mine, even though I feared my friends would start calling me Junior. They didn't, but what happened was, when people saw the Senior and the Junior in the book, they assumed the "Junior" was MY teenaged son (not) and that I was the Senior, so we still had mix-ups. lol I gave my son the same middle name as mine, but gave him his own unique first name. And even if my Internet Marketing business develops into a Fortune 500 company or some such thing, I know he will want nothing to do with it, legacy or not. Even if he did, I still value giving a kid his or her own unique identity. GT :-]
