Top tips for franchise success

Finding success in franchising is not that difficult; still, the job becomes easier if you have some pointers regarding the business. Here are some top tips on how to find success as a franchisee:

• Research and research more: The first cardinal rule of finding franchise success is that you must research the franchise market very well before choosing one of the many franchise opportunities in the market. There is much to investigate before deciding on a franchise business for sale offer. First of all, you are required to realize how well you gel with the category of your choice. Then you decide how much time you can spend for the business. Apart from these, you have to consider the brand-name of the franchise concept and its image in the market both as a producer and franchisor.
• Arrange for adequate finance: Finance is a big aspect of any business and franchising, being a business, is no different. But you need to put less effort in franchising than in any other business (even if you are a novice entrepreneur) in getting the required finance. This is because of the presence of a successful business model of the franchisor. Thus, you will find that doors of conservative financiers opening easily when you are starting a franchise. Furthermore, many franchisors provide for third-party financing or are registered as small business franchises. Hence, choosing such franchise concepts will make the process of getting finance easier. You can use your IRA or 401(k) plan as well.
• Check out your market: Whether it’s a product or a service, you will succeed only when there’s enough demand for that product/service in your market. The brand-name of the franchisor is one factor in determining the demand of the product/service; while demography of the area is another aspect. So, before you go out to buy a franchise, look at the average age of the population in your market, their income and taste to determine what kind of franchise concept will do well in your area. Also, look into the competition in that category from both branded and mom-and-pop establishments.
• Investigate the franchisor: A franchisee’s success is not possible without a good and reliable franchisor. Hence, another golden rule to find franchise success is to investigate the franchisor thoroughly. You should scrutinize the UFOC (or FDD), talk to the ex and present franchisees and take the help of a franchise attorney to read the Franchise Agreement.
• Look for long-term demand: Most franchise agreements are for 10 years or so; hence, knowing whether the business will be viable for the whole period is very necessary. So, don’t always go for the current popularity of the category, always look into the long-term demand before settling for a particular franchise business for sale offer.

Re: Which franchise would you buy? Re: Which franchise would you buy? - The franchise to buy, the one that will succeed is the one that is either underrepresented or not represented in the community. Look at your community, identify what service is missing. That is the franchise to pursue. Too many people buy a franchise based on their "heart". A franchise is a "widget". I have found that once people began to investigate a franchise they had never thought of, but find their is a need; the entrepreneurial "gene" kicks in and they get excited. They began seeing the possibilities of success, and as they uncover the nuances of the franchise, they become more interested. It is the uninformed that are uninspired.
Re: Franchising? Why pay franchise fees? Re: Franchising? Why pay franchise fees? - [quote:5ii0papt]Starting a franchise is like buying yourself a job and inheriting the "recipe for success". In addition, a good franchise in the proper location can translate into a license to print money... so why not?[/quote:5ii0papt] I tend to lean towards taking a more independent approach myself. This is because I like doing things my own way. There are plenty of success stories of small businesses that have dialed in there own concepts and marketed their business well... heck... that's how ALL franchisors are born. I see it as a toss-up really... relating to different personality types. Some investors don't want to think about building their own 'system', and would prefer to hit the ground running at whatever the expense - read franchise fees, royalties, etc.
Franchise Models Franchise Models - There's a really interesting book about franchise models. Written by Michael Gerber, 'The E-Myth' is all about setting up an individual business and creating it in a franchise mold which will enable it's success. Definitely worth a read.
Re: What causes franchises to fail? Re: What causes franchises to fail? - [quote="OmnivoreInk":1f2rlquf]I remember hearing that most new businesses fail in the first year...usually due to money issues. (I've been hearing that for many years, I suppose it's common sense that that would be the case.) I suppose that's the same for franchises? Once you buy a franchise, it probably takes about 5 years before it becomes profitable...if you don't have the cash to keep running for all that time...you go under.[/quote:1f2rlquf] While there are no statistics on this I would assume you are right; it probably takes 5 years for a franchise to become profitable, like any other business (in general). However, it has been proven that chances of success are higher when buying a franchise rather than when you start your own business. Franchising provides a proven business model which is why the success rates are higher.
Re: 3 Steps To Startup Success Re: 3 Steps To Startup Success - I have recently joined this forum and this is my first post. The forum is really good to for any new entrepreneur or planning to start new business. The tips shared by Evan is really good. I would also like to thank peter for suggestion regarding loan for small business entrepreneur. There is one more option and that is franchise. I think franchise has a different benefits if person don't want to take any risk.
