No matter what they tell you, certain prior skills and experience are needed when you go to buy a franchise. Most franchises, even the best franchises, take in people with no experience, but as entrepreneurs. They all want candidates who have experience in other fields, which are utilized by them to turn the candidates into expert franchisees. So, if you are thinking about starting a franchise, look into your resume once more and see what kind of experience you have. Most franchise opportunities don’t call for industry-specific skills (except very few); they need people with general business skills to run their franchises. Here are some job skills that you can translate into a career as a franchise owner:

• Have you been working in such a position that called for team work? Were you a supervisor of a team for many years? Then why not use that leadership skill to buy a franchise of any of the service-based franchise opportunities in the market! Maid-service, janitorial-service and handyman-service are some of the franchise concepts that look for an efficient team leader to guide a team of workers. Even computer maintenance franchise concepts like Friendly Mobile Computer Service want competent leaders to manage technical people expert in fixing any kind of computer-related problem.
• Did you regularly communicate with different kinds of people in your job and really enjoyed it? Then franchise opportunities, especially those that need you to be people’s person, can be ideal for you. Retail industry and food industry are the two categories to look for franchise business for sale offers in such cases.
• Maintaining a schedule and working under guidance is very essential in franchising. Every franchisor will have a strict guideline on how you can run the franchise. If you are a good listener and can take orders easily, then you are perfect for franchising. Almost any category is good for you to buy a franchise from. The franchisees need to follow the orders of the franchisor to succeed and this is one of the reasons why veterans (used to military lifestyle and taking orders) do so well in franchise business!
• Are you from marketing background? Is networking your forte? Then Business-to-Business franchise opportunities are good choice for you. This franchise category needs people who can market themselves well and know how to talk to people in business.
