Prioritizing Your Responsibilities AmericasBestFranchises.com by Darice Johnston, Senior Writer Once upon a time there were two business owners, Jane and Joe. They owned identical franchises, marketed their business in similar ways, and worked the same number of hours every week. But the success each experienced was vastly different.
Jane felt like she was on top of the world. She was filled with energy and enthusiasm every day. She felt confident enough to gracefully handle any challenge that came her way, and enjoyed watching her business flourish. Joe, on the other hand, was exhausted. His business was not producing well, and he felt like he was always starting over with his clients as well as his staff. It was as if his business was running him instead of him running his business. So…what could be going wrong, here? It may be a simple matter of priorities.
Now that you have a franchise, consider all the areas you are personally responsible for in order for your business to run smoothly: accounting, marketing, training, sales…the list goes on and on. Prioritizing your responsibilities is essential to both your personal productivity as well as the success of your business. If you are feeling exhausted, negative or overwhelmed you may not have a clear picture of what must be done consistently in order for your business to run efficiently. You may be attempting to handle certain responsibilities which you are not personally suited for, or allowing less important tasks take time and energy away from tasks that matter most. All this creates a serious energy drain on both you and your business that your clients, as well as your staff, will feel.
Here are some things you can do to get clear about your priorities and get onto the path of “positive productivity” every day:
1. On a blank piece of paper draw a circle for every realm of your business. One circle may be “accounting”, another “sales” and so forth.
2. Using a separate piece of paper for each realm you have identified, draw five columns and label them: DAILY, WEEKLY, MONTHLY, QUARTERLY, and ANNUALLY. List the standard tasks and duties you must perform consistently for that realm. For example, the realm of “sales” may include daily phone calls to new prospects, weekly follow-up calls to current clients, a monthly mailing piece and a quarterly marketing plan.
3. Now, compile the daily activities from each list and create ONE DAILY CHECK LIST which you post on the wall or carry in your planner. As you plan your day, always work from your list, referring to it religiously and checking things off as you go.
4. Determine standards for how you use your time, such as “I make my prospect calls between 9 and 10 am” or, “I train my staff every Monday at 8 am.” You will find having standard time frames in which you repeat key activities to be mentally freeing and induce productivity.
I assure you that as you apply this technique you will experience greater clarity, confidence and have more energy throughout each day. You and your business benefit when you are clear about your priorities.
Here’s to Your Success!
