Franchises appealing more to mature recruits

The average age of a franchisee has been growing steadily for the last ten years, rising from 40 to 46, according to the 2006 NatWest and British Franchise Association (BFA) franchise survey.

And the increase in this average age can be attributed to the general stability and "growing maturity" of the sector as a whole, said the BFA's head of marketing, Dan Archer.

He told the Express newspaper: "As the number of franchisees in the sector grows, the high success rates associated with franchising mean that the average age of the franchisee increases."

Of course, the biggest barrier to franchise growth is finding suitable franchisees.

But Richard Holden, national franchise manager at Lloyds TSB, pointed out that the government's small firms loans guarantee scheme, coupled with an increasing number of franchisee resales means the market is becoming an increasingly attractive option for older investors.

He said: "These higher investment franchise opportunities are likely to attract more mature candidates, who have the life skills, the experience, and the financial stability to successfully take on an established franchise."

Nevertheless, Mr Brown also points out that the increasing average age of franchisees is not affecting the younger end of the market, as the survey also recorded a four per cent rise in the number of franchisees below the age of 30.

Hey, if Nintendo can create a video game system that's appealing to senior citizens, then I'm sure that something like this can be appealing when marketed right. The main problem I see that you would face is that there are many senior citizens who don't even have a computer. Granted there are many that do these days, but there are also many that don't. However, if you can get the majority to join and network with each other and build up a decent-sized membership, word could get out and encourage those without a computer to get one and start connecting with others. You never know what's possible.
Re: What is the best age to become an entrepreneur? - I dont think there is a right or wrong age to start, I do think you have to be mature enough to deal with setbacks and defeats along the way though and have the strength of mind to carry on
Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips - I only mentioned that the design of a site should be just as important because I personally won't stay at a site very long if the design looks like "crap." I'm not very picky by any means, but it's easy to tell if a site is just thrown together or whether the person took even a small amount of time to make it somewhat appealing. If the site looks horrible, it doesn't matter how good the content is, I'll leave. That's my own personal preference, so when creating my own sites, if I don't like how something looks, I'll change it until I like it. There's a good chance that there's someone else out there that will think close to the same as me. Meaning, if I think it looks appealing, then others out there will too. Hopefully, anyway. Also keep in mind you only have so many seconds to grab their attention, and chances are that they're looking at the overall design of the site before the awesome content.
franchisebrief.com good clean design - I actually really like the design - it's clean and not busy. The information is easy to find. You mentioned you didn't want to monetize from the site thru the use of adwords but what about JV'ing with all or most of the Franchises you are referring people to. Is that possible in the Franchise industry?
Re: Franchise Support. What is it to you? - To be honest I have never been a big believer in Franchises. Which of them did you have the best and worst experience with, when you called in as an "interested buyer"?
