Looking good is no longer just about having the perfect hair and make up. For many women having beautifully manicured nails is a huge confidence boost. And of course the social experience of going to a salon is one many women enjoy. What better way to spend a Saturday with friends than to head to a nail bar for some girlie pampering?

With so many women now willing to spend money on their nails, and many more looking for new, creative ways to make their hands stand out from the crowd, investing in a nail salon franchise could be a great opportunity for someone eager to get into the beauty industry.

So who would be suited to such an opportunity? Well franchisees are offered full training in all aspects of running a nail salon, but having strong business acumen will of course be advantageous. Good customer service skills would also be of huge benefit, since making sure customers have an enjoyable experience is the key to running a successful nail salon franchise.

As well as these skills it is important that franchisees have a passion for beauty and an interest in following trends. A salon that doesn't keep up with the latest fashions in nail design will find it difficult to survive. Therefore franchisees must have their ear to the ground at all times and be willing to adapt quickly to change according to the needs of the customer.

Franchising may not be for everyone, since franchisers will expect a certain level of commitment and dedication to making the business a quick success. After all, it's their name on the door. But for those driven enough and determined enough to start making a profit from day one, franchising can offer several benefits.

First of all an already established brand name will mean less investment in marketing and advertising, since customers may already be familiar with the business. However where marketing is needed to being customers in, the franchiser will offer support.

Secondly, the franchiser will also offer help and guidance on issues such as hiring and training staff, establishing relationships with suppliers, and other managerial tasks central to running a nail salon.

And of course franchiser will also help with location choice, which is perhaps the most important thing to consider when setting up a nail salon franchise. Assessing demand and competition is critical, and whilst it is important for franchisees to do their own homework, it is obviously in the franchiser's interests to help out here.

Helping people look good can be a rewarding job, so for those suited to the task investing in a nail salon franchise could not only be a profitable way to make a living, but also an enjoyable one.

There's all sorts of evidence that tanning beds cause skin cancer in far greater numbers than sunbathers under "real" sun. While this may not prevent people from using suntanning beds, even with all the new warnings that the beds will have to be labeled with soon, you can bet that as soon as those people get skin cancer, they'll be suing the tanning salon. Its just like cigarette smoking. People smoke despite the warnings plastered on every packet, but when they get cancer...oh, it's the cigarette company's fault![/quote:1m80iqmd] I have friends that started with a small salon - 8-10 beds and now they have 20+ and several specialty options that coordinate very nicely with the tanning beds. I am well aware of the health risks, but have a skin condition that can only be treated through a tanning bed. Makes no sense, but nothing else works and over the years I've tried everything on the market and all kinds of unusual treatments. After a few sessions in the beds, my skin clears up. I talked with the owner of the salon I go to and they have a decent number of people who go there for health reasons. Shri

Re: Women-owned Franchises on the Increase Re: Women-owned Franchises on the Increase -
This is great news GT, although I'm not entirely surprised, franchising is a very good way to go for a lot of women who want to start up their own business and be able to determine the hours they work so that they are more able to fit the business around their family and children. Carol[/quote:yol98dmb] I was speaking with a friend of mind a couple of days ago, who is also a hair stylist. She's been cutting hair for 20 years, and used to manage a Great Clips, and her opinion on franchising a salon (such as a Great Clips) is that it's not worth it. Unless you have your own salon, so you can set your own limits for advertising and what to buy, you don't really make any money at it. Course that's just hair...but in today's economy especially, who knows how many mothers are now cutting the hair of everyone in their family!

Re: Which franchise would you buy? Re: Which franchise would you buy? -
I like franchises that I have a personal interest in. I know this sounds redudant, but you hear about people who think they are going to invest in one franchise (or franchise industry), only to go a completely different direction after researching and gathering info. Personally, I like home service franchises - most of these are either mobile or home based (or both) and usually have relatively low start up costs (and there are many many to choose from across the industry).[/quote:2073rca2] Hi theFranchiseMarket, Can you list some of your favorite home service franchises for us and explain why they stand out from the rest? Thanks
