Starting up a Franchise business during a difficult economic time

Even though there are some optimistic indications that inflation and unemployment have fallen somewhat in recent times its apparent that we aren't out of the woods yet. High energy costs, increased taxes and normal wages out of line with the pace of inflation, all equate to the fact that there isn't as much money to go around as there used to be.

Keeping this in mind, where does it leave those that are considering a new enterprise like a franchise start up? Franchise business seems to perform well despite recession and tough economic times. In reality, some of the largest high street names in the franchise industry set up business through a downturn. However, can a time of economic difficulty actually be good for starting up a franchise system?

There are a few key points behind the franchise business model that will often set it favourably to deal with the sometimes restless state of the economy:-

A franchise business is born out of a verified business concept

A franchise business is frequently started up as a pilot business (or a number of pilot businesses), which confirm the business conception is workable previous to pushing it out as a tried and tested franchise system. This helps to ensure that the business franchise idea is viable and will be effective. Of course no new business is lacking total risk, however this methodology helps to maximise the opportunity of success.

A franchise system is designed to be a copyable model

Regardless of whether you go for a big retail franchise or a low cost, home based franchise, the underlying notion of a franchise opportunity is that each and every outlet built on the franchise is run and worked in precisely the same way. This uniformity brings advantage to the franchise network as a whole since it upholds a consistent brand, but in addition what is found to work (the established franchise business concept) is copied over and over again by each individual franchise business owner.

A franchise provides necessary training and support

The vast majority of franchisors offer full training and support as a part of the deal. This means not only are you educated in how to operate the tested business concept successfully, you might also have somebody to chat on the phone to in case you are not sure or could do with help on a particular business operational issue.

The above are just a small number of the benefits of operating a franchise business. Of course, as a franchise business owner, you are essentially starting up your own business and you will, ultimately, be responsible for whether you accomplish your goals or whether you don't. The beneficial elements of a franchise system together with your dedication and an eagerness to work hard, can provide you with an excellent platform to operating a lucrative business.

Re: Franchise Surveys Re: Franchise Surveys - Another good tool to researching a franchise is to speak with their existing franchisees. This contact information is included in most Franchise Disclosure Documents. In order to get a Franchise Disclosure Document or FDD as it is often referred to, you will have to complete a basic franchise application. The franchisor will then usually provide you with the FDD at that time. Included in that book of information is a list of the existing franchisees, the contract, the investment information etc... This information is required by Federal Law to be disclosed to your prior to making a purchase. So be sure to do your research and start with the Franchise Documents to get the initial information.
